Be the Good!
While driving today, I saw a bumper sticker that said, "Be the Good," and it made me smile big. I began to think of ways I am and could continue attempting to be the good wherever I am. I would like to challenge you to think of this as well. Whether it’s letting a car merge into your lane, paying for the coffee of the person behind you in the drive-thru, or letting someone else snag the last parking spot, these small gestures can have a profound ripple effect. While turning the other cheek when tensions rise may be challenging, those efforts can inspire others to follow suit. With practice, it becomes easier to be the good — a phrase that embodies the intentional choice to spread positivity and kindness.
What Does It Mean to Be the Good?
To be the good means choosing kindness and compassion in everyday interactions. It’s about creating moments that uplift others, even when no one is watching. It doesn’t require grand gestures; the small, selfless acts often leave a lasting impact.
Being the good could look like this:
·?????? Offering a genuine compliment to a stranger.
·?????? Sending a heartfelt note of gratitude to someone who’s helped you.
·?????? Helping someone carry their groceries.
·?????? Listening without interruption when someone shares their struggles.
As the saying goes, No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
The Pros of Being the Good
·?????? Improved Mental Health: Studies show that acts of kindness release feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, reducing stress and improving overall well-being.
·?????? Building Stronger Connections: Being kind fosters trust and strengthens relationships. People remember how you make them feel.
·?????? Positive Ripple Effect: Your actions inspire others to pay it forward, creating a chain reaction of goodness.
·?????? Greater Perspective: Helping others often put your challenges into perspective, reminding you of life’s blessings.
“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” — Princess Diana
Watch for Boundaries
While spreading kindness, it’s important to set healthy boundaries to avoid being taken advantage of:
·?????? Recognize Intentions: Not everyone will reciprocate kindness, and that’s okay. Kindness isn’t about receiving; it’s about giving.
·?????? Know Your Limits: It’s essential to help others without overextending yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
·?????? Be Mindful of Repeat-Takers: Generosity is lovely, but if someone consistently takes advantage of your kindness, stepping back is okay.
“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” — Kahlil Gibran
A Practice Worth Perfecting
Being the good doesn’t always come naturally. There will be moments when frustration tempts you to lash out or look the other way. But with practice, you’ll find that choosing kindness becomes easier and enriches your life and the lives of those around you.
This holiday season, amidst the inevitable chaos, let’s commit to packing our patience, spreading cheer, and practicing kindness. After all, when you be the good, you don’t just brighten someone else’s day—you also light up your own.
