It's true. Having good design will help you do good business. You have to capture your customer's attention in under 5 seconds. How hard can it be to do that?
You could pull some images off of google and create your own ads and marketing materials, but most likely, those images are copyrighted and legally, that could mean trouble. This applies to any intellectual property, really.
What about those free templates? Those do work well, but how many people are using them? Do you want the same design has hundreds of people? What is unique about that? Will that really make a potential customer want to grab your product or call you up for your service?
