Good day PARENTS. > Readings for week of 18-24.08.2024. [in English +22 languages] Discuss these readings with your children and neighbors.

(Go to the middle of this document for “Further Insights” and to the end for my mission statement and background, please.)

Our first reading, Joshua 24, takes us back about 3,425 years. Joshua, who succeeded Moses, brilliantly led his wondering Israelites into Canaan, the land promised to Abraham (1406 B.C.). In his final farewell speech Joshua makes his people choose whether to worship and obey ABBA-God or the Idols carved out of stone and wood: “…13?I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them.

14?“So fear the?Lord?and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the?Lord?alone.?15?But if you refuse to serve the?Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the?Lord.”

16?The people replied, “We would never abandon the?Lord?and serve other gods.?17?For the?Lord?our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us.?18?It was the?Lord?who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the?Lord, for he alone is our God.”

19?Then Joshua warned the people, “You are not able to serve the?Lord, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.?20?If you abandon the?Lord?and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”

21?But the people answered Joshua, “No, we will serve the?Lord!”

22?“You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said. “You have chosen to serve the?Lord.”

Yes,” they replied, “we are witnesses to what we have said.”

(Photos by Juro [George] Kne?i? in London, Canada.)

23?“All right then,” Joshua said, “destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the?Lord, the God of Israel.”

24?The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the?Lord?our God. We will obey him alone.”…”

(I am reminded of watching the paintings and statues in my childhood during church service in Dalmatia, Croatia. Both the Orthodox and Catholic churches are filled with these “Idols”. If only my Slavic ancestors had obeyed Joshua’s command to “destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the?Lord…”)

About 400 years later King David gives the same warning as Joshua in his song, Psalm 34,: “…15?The eyes of the?Lord?watch over those who do right;

????his ears are open to their cries for help.

16?But the?Lord?turns his face against those who do evil;

????he will erase their memory from the earth.

17?The?Lord?hears his people when they call to him for help.

????He rescues them from all their troubles.

18?The?Lord?is close to the brokenhearted;

????he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

19?The righteous person faces many troubles,

????but the?Lord?comes to the rescue each time.

20?For the?Lord?protects the bones of the righteous;

????not one of them is broken!

21?Calamity will surely destroy the wicked,

????and those who hate the righteous will be punished.

22?But the?Lord?will redeem those who serve him.

????No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.”

?In Ephesians 6 Paul brings us to the new covenant, the Christian era, as he spells out in detail how the new believers have to prepare to fight and overcome their human desires and live by being guided by the Holy Spirit: “…The Whole Armor of God

10?A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.?11?Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.?12?For we[d]?are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

13?Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.?14?Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.?15?For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e]?16?In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f]?17?Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18?Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.[g]

19?And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.[h]?20?I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should…”

(Parents discuss the above passage with your children. Then have them demonstrate putting on each piece of a Roman soldier’s armor as given above.)

Finally, in John 6, ?apostle John, who also wrote Revelations, shows just how difficult it was for the Hebrews to understand and follow Jesus: “…47?“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.?48?Yes, I am the bread of life!?49?Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.?50?Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.?51?I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”

52?Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.

53?So Jesus said again,?“I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.?54?But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.?55?For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.?56?Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.?57?I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.?58?I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever…”

(Photos by Juro [George] Kne?i? in London, Canada.)

(It is only by a leap of FAITH that one may understand and accept the above words of Lord Jesus. Jesus used metaphors because we humans need to jump up from using human logic to visualizing, by using our imagination. It is interesting that Albert Einstein said that “imagination is more important than knowledge”.)????????????????????

(B) This week’s scripture readings in full:

i. ?Joshua 24 = The?Lord’s Covenant Renewed?????????????

24?Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God.

2?Joshua said to the people, “This is what the?Lord, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River,[a]?and they worshiped other gods.?3?But I took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac.?4?To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir, while Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5?“Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought terrible plagues on Egypt; and afterward I brought you out as a free people.?6?But when your ancestors arrived at the Red Sea,[b]?the Egyptians chased after you with chariots and charioteers.?7?When your ancestors cried out to the?Lord, I put darkness between you and the Egyptians. I brought the sea crashing down on the Egyptians, drowning them. With your very own eyes you saw what I did. Then you lived in the wilderness for many years.

8?“Finally, I brought you into the land of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I destroyed them before you. I gave you victory over them, and you took possession of their land.?9?Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, started a war against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to curse you,?10?but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak.

11?“When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over them.?12?And I sent terror[c]?ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory.?13?I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living.

23?“All right then,” Joshua said, “destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the?Lord, the God of Israel.”

24?The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the?Lord?our God. We will obey him alone.”

25?So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the decrees and regulations of the?Lord.?26?Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the?Lord.

27?Joshua said to all the people, “This stone has heard everything the?Lord?said to us. It will be a witness to testify against you if you go back on your word to God.”

28?Then Joshua sent all the people away to their own homelands.

Leaders Buried in the Promised Land

29?After this, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the?Lord, died at the age of 110.?30?They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31?The people of Israel served the?Lord?throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him—those who had personally experienced all that the?Lord?had done for Israel.

32?The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought along with them when they left Egypt, were buried at Shechem, in the plot of land Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor for 100 pieces of silver.[d]?This land was located in the territory allotted to the descendants of Joseph.

33?Eleazar son of Aaron also died. He was buried in the hill country of Ephraim, in the town of Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas.

1?I will praise the?Lord?at all times.

????I will constantly speak his praises.

2?I will boast only in the?Lord;

3?Come, let us tell of the?Lord’s greatness;

12?Does anyone want to live a life

13?Then keep your tongue from speaking evil

????and your lips from telling lies!

14?Turn away from evil and do good.

????Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

iii. Ephesians 6 = Children and Parents??????

6?Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord,[a]?for this is the right thing to do.?2?“Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:?3?If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”[b]

4?Fathers,[c]?do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Slaves and Masters

5?Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.?6?Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart.?7?Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.?8?Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.

9?Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.

The Whole Armor of God

So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.

Final Greetings

21?To bring you up to date, Tychicus will give you a full report about what I am doing and how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper in the Lord’s work.?22?I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you.

23?Peace be with you, dear brothers and sisters,[i]?and may God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you love with faithfulness.?24?May God’s grace be eternally upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.

iv.?John 6 = Jesus Feeds Five Thousand??????????????????????????????????

6?After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.?2?A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.?3?Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him.?4?(It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.)?5?Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked,?“Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”?6?He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.

7?Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money[a]?to feed them!”

8?Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.?9?“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

10?“Tell everyone to sit down,”?Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)?11?Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.?12?After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples,?“Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”?13?So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.

14?When the people saw him[b]?do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”[c]?15?When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16?That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.?17?But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.?18?Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough.?19?They had rowed three or four miles[d]?when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,?20?but he called out to them,?“Don’t be afraid. I am here![e]”?21?Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!

Jesus, the Bread of Life

22?The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them.?23?Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.?24?So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him.?25?They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26?Jesus replied,?“I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.?27?But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man[f]?can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

28?They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”

29?Jesus told them,?“This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

30?They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do??31?After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[g]”

32?Jesus said,?“I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.?33?The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34?“Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”

35?Jesus replied,?“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.?36?But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me.?37?However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.?38?For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.?39?And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.?40?For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”

41?Then the people[h]?began to murmur in disagreement because he had said,?“I am the bread that came down from heaven.”?42?They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

43?But Jesus replied,?“Stop complaining about what I said.?44?For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.?45?As it is written in the Scriptures,[i]?‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.?46?(Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.)

47?“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.?48?Yes, I am the bread of life!?49?Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.?50?Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.?51?I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”

59?He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60?Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”

61?Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them,?“Does this offend you??62?Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again??63?The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.?64?But some of you do not believe me.”?(For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)?65?Then he said,?“That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”

66?At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.?67?Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked,?“Are you also going to leave?”

68?Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.?69?We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.[j]”

70?Then Jesus said,?“I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”?71?He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him.?
