Isaiah 53 was written by the prophet Isaiah about 680 B.C. What Isaiah revealed almost 700 years before the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, is truly miraculous as chapter 53 synthesizes the total life of Jesus: “…3?He was despised and rejected—
????a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
????He was despised, and we did not care.
4?Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
????it was our sorrows[a]?that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
????a punishment for his own sins!
5?But he was pierced for our rebellion,
????crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
????He was whipped so we could be healed…
8?Unjustly condemned,
????he was led away.[b]
No one cared that he died without descendants,
????that his life was cut short in midstream.[c]
But he was struck down
????for the rebellion of my people.
9?He had done no wrong
????and had never deceived anyone.
But he was buried like a criminal;
????he was put in a rich man’s grave.
10?But it was the?Lord’s good plan to crush him
????and cause him grief.
Yet when his life is made an offering for sin,
????he will have many descendants.
He will enjoy a long life,
????and the?Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands…”
Note well Isaiah’s key point: “…5?But he was pierced for our rebellion,
????crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
????He was whipped so we could be healed…”
The composer of Psalm 91 speaks directly to us during our Covid-19 plague. If we make “the Most High” our shelter the plague will not touch us: “…5?Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
????nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6?Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
????nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7?Though a thousand fall at your side,
????though ten thousand are dying around you,
????these evils will not touch you.
8?Just open your eyes,
????and see how the wicked are punished.
9?If you make the?Lord?your refuge,
????if you make the Most High your shelter,
10?no evil will conquer you;
????no plague will come near your home.
11?For he will order his angels
????to protect you wherever you go.
12?They will hold you up with their hands
????so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone…”
In Hebrews 5, the Christian writer (Paul?) is telling recent converts to Christianity to stand firmly in their faith. He explains that it was ABBA-God who appointed Jesus to his high position: “…5?That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,
“You are my Son.
????Today I have become your Father.[a]”
6?And in another passage God said to him,
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]…
?10?And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.”
In Mark 10, apostle Mark, without the tools like a microphone and a voice recorder modern reporters use, reports in detail on how Christian leaders will lead by example, humility, and by serving others: “…41?When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.?42?So Jesus called them together and said,?“You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.?43?But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,?44?and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.?45?For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”…”
Therefore, Christians can live without fear by serving ABBA-God and mankind.

B i. Update 12 October, 2022 on our Canadian not so secret culture: The resignation by CEO SCOTT Smith and the entire Board of Directors of Hockey Canada is a quake of 8.8 on the Richter scale. Mr. Smith and his team have correctly defended themselves that the sexual gang rapes of women, the cash payments?etc. are part of our Canadian culture. And the revelations are not surprising to PM J. Trudeau or anyone familiar what happens in our secondary schools. Indeed, why sexual activity by hockey players exploded on our news media would be amusing to fellow staff at Norwich District High School (1970…1975), especially Coach Smith and Principal Dick Mackenzie. Well, perhaps the public declarations of sexual rapes with cash payments to silence the women and the final resignation by Mr. Smith could be a real cultural shift. Hope springs eternal.?See:?https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/hockey-canada-board-1.6612582

(C) [i] Here is chapter 17 of the book of Proverbs for this week:?Start reading the book of Proverbs, in the Old Testament, with your children and neighbors. Read and discuss one complete chapter, or half a chapter, every week.
King Solomon clearly gives the purpose of his book,?Proverbs, in the first chapter, verses: “2?Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise.?3?Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair…” Open: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/book-proverbs-17-%D0%BA%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B3%D0%B0-%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%B9-%D0%B3%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B0-buch-der-spr%C3%BCche-juro-knezic/
[ii] Christianity is not a political ideology or an “ism”. Nevertheless, the faithful living together and sharing all their goods seeded a definition of their communal structure. Modern Christian societies in Europe, and to a smaller degree in the Americas, have this Christian consciousness in their social-political systems. Yes, the vast wilderness of the Americas has been a poor soil for the growth of this communal ethos. “Born-again” Christians in America would still find it hard to accept that this alien, socialistic idea came from the Power of Light {Lord Jesus Christ} and not the Power of Darkness {Satan, the Devil}. Focus on reading and discussing Chapters 2 and 4 of The Book of Acts as a way of appreciating the foundation of our Christian heritage.

(B) This week’s scripture readings in full:
i. Isaiah 53 53?Who has believed our message?
????To whom has the?Lord?revealed his powerful arm?
2?My servant grew up in the?Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot,
????like a root in dry ground.
There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance,
????nothing to attract us to him.
3?He was despised and rejected—
????a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.

6?All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
????We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the?Lord?laid on him
????the sins of us all.
7?He was oppressed and treated harshly,
????yet he never said a word.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
????And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
????he did not open his mouth.
8?Unjustly condemned,

11?When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish,
????he will be satisfied.
And because of his experience,
????my righteous servant will make it possible
for many to be counted righteous,
????for he will bear all their sins.
12?I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier,
????because he exposed himself to death.
He was counted among the rebels.
????He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.

ii. Psalm 91
?1?Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
????will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2?This I declare about the?Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
????he is my God, and I trust him.
3?For he will rescue you from every trap
????and protect you from deadly disease.
4?He will cover you with his feathers.

14?The?Lord?says, “I will rescue those who love me.

iii. Hebrews 5 ?????????????????????????????
5?Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins.?2?And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses.?3?That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
4?And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was.?5?That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,
“You are my Son.
????Today I have become your Father.[a]”
6?And in another passage God said to him,
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]
7?While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.?8?Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.?9?In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.?10?And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
A Call to Spiritual Growth
11?There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen.?12?You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.[c]?You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.?13?For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right.?14?Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

iv. ?Mark 10:35-45 Discussion about Divorce and Marriage
10?Then Jesus left Capernaum and went down to the region of Judea and into the area east of the Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered around him, and as usual he was teaching them.
2?Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?”
3?Jesus answered them with a question:?“What did Moses say in the law about divorce?”
4?“Well, he permitted it,” they replied. “He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away.”[a]
5?But Jesus responded,?“He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.?6?But ‘God made them male and female’[b]?from the beginning of creation.?7?‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife,[c]?8?and the two are united into one.’[d]?Since they are no longer two but one,?9?let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
10?Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.?11?He told them,?“Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her.?12?And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.”
Jesus Blesses the Children
13?One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
14?When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them,?“Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.?15?I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”?16?Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.
The Rich Man
17?As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18?“Why do you call me good?”?Jesus asked.?“Only God is truly good.?19?But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’[e]”
20?“Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
21?Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.?“There is still one thing you haven’t done,”?he told him.?“Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22?At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
23?Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,?“How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”?24?This amazed them. But Jesus said again,?“Dear children, it is very hard[f]?to enter the Kingdom of God.?25?In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
26?The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
27?Jesus looked at them intently and said,?“Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
28?Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
29?“Yes,”?Jesus replied,?“and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,?30?will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.?31?But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.[g]”s
Jesus Again Predicts His Death
32?They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him.?33?“Listen,”?he said,?“we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man[h]?will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans.[i]?34?They will mock him, spit on him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again.”
Jesus Teaches about Serving Others
35?Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.”
36?“What is your request?”?he asked.
37?They replied, “When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”
38?But Jesus said to them,?“You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?”
39?“Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”
Then Jesus told them,?“You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering.?40?But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”
41?When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.?42?So Jesus called them together and said,?“You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.?43?But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,?44?and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.?45?For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus
46?Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road.?47?When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48?“Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him.
But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49?When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said,?“Tell him to come here.”
So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!”?50?Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
51?“What do you want me to do for you?”?Jesus asked.
“My Rabbi,[j]” the blind man said, “I want to see!”
52?And Jesus said to him,?“Go, for your faith has healed you.”?Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.[k]
