With tremendous pride I say goodbye to the San Francisco Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEEF) Community Advisory Committee (CAC).
After four years I term out to make way for more San Franciscans to put their best foot forward in support of our San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) students, staff, faculty, and community. Appointed by Commissioner Rachel Norton, I leave with a full heart, and proud of the work the Committee undertook these past four years. Thank you Commissioner Norton!
SAN FRANCISCO VALUES
In 2004, San Francisco voted to create the Public Education Enrichment Fund providing funding to improve the quality of education for the youth of San Francisco. Divided in three parts, PEEF funds support:
- Preschool for all
- Sports, Libraries, Arts, and Music (SLAM)
- Programs such as wellness centers, student support professionals, translation services, and peer resources
In just my four years, the PEEF budget grew from ~$75M to ~$88M.
In 2014 San Francisco voters approved this funding through 2040-41, without any tax increases. San Francisco proved again it cares about its children.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
The CAC is charged to review PEEF funded programs and annually provide formal guidance to both the Superintendent and School Board. Our ‘15-‘16 report prioritized:
- Funding programs that offer direct services to students
- Expecting creativity, innovation, and sustainability
- Addressing access and equity
- Increasing social and emotional safety
2015-16 PEEF METRICS
- SFUSD students checked out 1,000,000+ library books
- All 72 elementary schools have Physical Education
- All 60,000+ SFUSD students have access to various arts programs
- …and the list goes on and on
MY INTEREST IN EDUCATION
Raised by my Depression-Era father who only finished the 10th grade, it was his laser focus on a well rounded education plus his motivation to “leave this place better than you found it” that has driven my interests.
Serving on the PEEF CAC these past four years has provided me the extraordinary opportunity to serve our City and County of San Francisco in various way focusing on our city’s youth:
THANK YOU
This list is long of those who supported me in so many ways. I am grateful for the new friendships. I appreciate the challenging and diverse opinions of so many who care deeply about children/youth/students/education. I am the better person for these past four years.
WHAT’S NEXT…
As this chapter ends, I look forward to finding the next opportunity to serve in order to “leave this place better/cleaner, than how I found it”.

8 年Props to you for your service. My parents' top priority, too, was always education—and they got all six of us through graduate school. Your dad would be proud. Best of luck in your next endeavor.
