Good, Better, Best

Good, Better, Best

Good, Better, Best…Now girls and guys regroup and rest

?

Earlier last week I posted a quote my daddy taught to me in grade school.

“Good, Better, Best

Never let them rest

If you do good

You can do better

You can do best.”

In theory, this is a motivational push toward excellence. However, there are a couple of caveats that I would like to add about the pursuit. You need time to rest, recreate, and rejuvenate.

?I have a friend whose daughter runs track. She is a rising superstar and has made it to the Junior Olympics twice. This young lady's work ethic and dedication are apparent. She is regularly ordained with medals and honors. She also excels academically. Like any athlete, she does not always end up on the podium. There are times when she turns in a PBR (personal best record).? Like her, we are always running two races, one against others on the field, and the other one against ourselves. Yes, we all want accolades and adornments, but what counts is that we have bested ourselves.

In business class, we are taught about benchmarks and KPIs (key performance indicators) “Benchmarks compare your performance to others while KPIs chart your progress against yours or your company's goals. (https//beachmarr.com)

You cannot control what others do. So why worry about them? I am not saying to be oblivious to what is happening around you, but your job is to show up as your best authentic self. Give yourself grace, but you also must hold yourself accountable. All while striving to be balanced and well-rounded. Can you imagine if athletes spent 24/7 practicing and competing? ?We all require downtime and recovery. ?Yet, some of us seem to have no off switch even when we are on vacation we are taking whole staged photoshoots. I am learning to be more in the moment instead of capturing the moment for social media.

The good thing about this mantra is that when applied properly you will always show another business term process improvement.
