While Bhutan may not be the initial choice for golfing enthusiasts, it certainly offers them exceptional and captivating experiences. With its unspoiled environments and tranquil ambiance, Bhutan presents well-crafted golf courses. As a result, golf has gained significant traction in Bhutan, establishing itself as a prominent aspect of the country's sports and recreational pursuits. Both residents and visitors are wholeheartedly embracing the sport, which seamlessly combines a passion for the game with the breathtaking surroundings of Bhutan.
Golf in Bhutan began in 1968 and today, there are a total of four golf courses, which are all 9 holes. These include the Royal Thimphu Golf Club (RTGC), India House Golf Club, Haa Golf Club, and Drakpoi Golf Club.
The Royal Thimphu Golf Club, established in 1968, holds the distinction of being the oldest and most conveniently located golf course in Bhutan. Situated in downtown Thimphu, it finds itself in close proximity to the renowned Tashichho Dzong, a historically significant landmark and the seat of the Bhutanese government. The golf course is embraced by lush green pine forests and boasts panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Adding to its allure, the Wangditse Monastery is perched atop the course, providing visitors with yet another captivating historical site. To reach the monastery, which holds great importance in Bhutan's history, one can embark on a scenic hike that spans approximately 30 to 40 minutes and offers breathtaking vistas of the Thimphu Valley.
Within the Royal Thimphu Golf Club (RTGC), there is a charming clubhouse featuring a cozy small restaurant. This eatery offers a delightful array of local and regional culinary delights, accompanied by an extensive selection of beverages. It's highly likely that you'll encounter friendly and talkative local golfers at the clubhouse, who are more than willing to share their knowledge about various aspects of Thimphu and beyond, including golfing, hiking, dining, nightlife, sightseeing, meditation, and much more.
If you're planning to play a full 18-hole round at RTGC, it's recommended to pre-order the clubhouse's renowned Thali for a satisfying lunch break in between your rounds. The Thali is available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Furthermore, be sure to save some room for local beers, whiskies, and momos (dumplings) towards the end of your game, as they are delightful treats to savor and enjoy.
Wednesday is the busiest day of the week on the RTGC calendar, as “Frenemies” the local golfers group organizes a weekly open mini tournament that offers non-locals a great window into the local culture, and unparalleled exposure to the local sense of humour.

One of the notable aspects of golf in Bhutan is the preservation of the country's unique cultural values.
