Golf Swing Mechanics 6
Around 45% of players suffer from playing over the top and with high handicap players it is very common. It is usually the result of upper body dominance in the golf swing.
Characteristics- The club has an optimal swing plane it has to go through in the down swing, with over the top players the club stays above the plane resulting in a Out-to-In motion(as seen by the picture borrowed from TPI), resulting in decreased power, m inconsistent ball strike desultory in either pulling or slicing the ball.
Causes - kinematic sequence is key with over the top. The in ability to separate upper and lower body moments can lead to the upper body being overused in the swing which could stem from a restriction in spinal and hip mobility. Decreased abdominal and lower back strength could lead to the inability to stabilise the spine effectively. Not having good balance can lead to reduced power production through the back leg or ineffective power transfer to the lead side.
Corrections - rotational move the of the hip and shoulders independently to learn to dissociate upper and lower body. Rotational mobility for spine and hips, abdominal and lower back strength and endurance rotational work. Finally Single leg training for stability and force production.
