Golf, Business, and Sponsorship: Building Relationships on the Green.

Golf, Business, and Sponsorship: Building Relationships on the Green.

At Stanbic Bank Botswana, we understand the importance of fostering meaningful connections in both our community and the business world. This year, I had the privilege of facilitating Stanbic Bank’s sponsorship of the Nomads Golf Tournament—a prestigious event that highlights the close connection between golf and business. Beyond my role at the bank, this sponsorship resonates with me on a personal level.

?Why Sponsorships Matter—Personally and Professionally

?Sponsoring events like the Nomads Golf Tournament isn’t just about supporting a sport; it’s about joining a network built on camaraderie and collaboration. I’ve always believed in the power of golf as a platform where business and personal growth intersect. The green offers a unique space to reflect, build relationships, and truly get to know people outside the confines of the boardroom. It’s where meaningful conversations happen, and lasting bonds are formed.

?This year’s tournament brought together a dynamic mix of professionals, from executives to emerging leaders, creating valuable exchanges both on and off the course. It was about more than just competition—it was about strengthening ties, fostering new partnerships, and reinforcing our commitment to growing together.

?The Value of Golf in Business

?Golf has long been known as the “sport of business,” and I can personally vouch for its value. Spending four hours on a golf course offers a rare glimpse into someone’s character—how they handle challenges, treat others, and approach the game. The game has always been a way to connect on a deeper level with colleagues and clients.

?Goldman Sachs’ former investment banking head, Gregg Lemkau, said it best: “No one remembers a business presentation, but they’ll always remember the time spent on a golf course together.” I’ve seen firsthand how deals are made, insights shared, and relationships built during these rounds—something that’s difficult to replicate in a formal meeting.

?The Need for More Women in Golf

?One of my personal passions is seeing more women involved in golf. Traditionally male-dominated, golf offers immense opportunities for networking and relationship-building that women can equally benefit from. Women bring unique perspectives and strengths to the table, and I believe the sport offers a platform for them to break barriers and build valuable connections.

?Golf isn’t just about learning the game—it’s about embracing the opportunities that come with it. I’ve seen how the sport has opened doors for women in business, allowing them to network with senior executives, build partnerships, and enjoy an outdoor activity that fosters both personal and professional growth.

While I’m not a golfer (yet!), I’ve always been fascinated by how much the game parallels business—strategic thinking, patience and relationship building all in one. Looking forward to learning more about how golf can open doors both professionally and personally. I hope to engage you soon Mr O.
