Similarly, when it comes to AI, we should adopt a "Goldilocks rule": be neither overly optimistic nor overly fearful about what AI can or cannot do.

AI is a powerful tool, but it won’t solve all of humanity’s problems or instantly create a global utopia. For example, some overly optimistic narratives suggest that we’re on the verge of AI becoming sentient or achieving superintelligence, leading to revolutionary breakthroughs in healthcare, wealth creation, and every other domain imaginable.While these dreams are inspiring, they’re not realistic in the near term. Sentience or artificial general intelligence (AGI) is not "right around the corner." Instead, today’s AI systems are highly specialized and excel at specific tasks, not at replicating human-like intelligence.
Avoiding Over-Pessimism About AI
On the flip side, some of the most extreme fears about AI, like it becoming a sentient superintelligence that “decides to wipe out humanity,” are also highly unlikely. While AI does come with risks—such as bias, unfair outputs, or misuse—these risks are manageable with proper oversight and safeguards.The fear of "losing control" to AI or it becoming a “competitive species” is more in the realm of science fiction rather than reality. As humans, we already manage incredibly complex systems like corporations and nation-states, which are far more powerful than any single individual. With the same vigilance and responsibility, we can manage AI effectively.
A Realistic View of AI
Instead of extremes, we should take a balanced approach to AI. Here’s what that looks like:

The Challenge of Explainability
One major limitation of AI is explainability. How do we know if the AI is correct? How can we trust its decision?

That said, humans are also not great at explaining how we make decisions. For instance, if you look at a coffee mug and instantly recognize it, you might struggle to articulate exactly how you identified it. Similarly, AI’s lack of explainability can sometimes be a barrier to its acceptance, but this is an area of active research and improvement.
