The Golden Obsession: Is Our Pursuit of Validation Just Like Chasing an Oscar?

The Golden Obsession: Is Our Pursuit of Validation Just Like Chasing an Oscar?

Good evening ladies and gentlemen!

Recently, I received an email notifying me that I would be verified on social media. For a split second, it elated me at the prospect of being part of an exclusive club. But deep down, I knew it was not real because I wasn't qualified. It got me thinking about the psychological need for validation and pursuing fame and recognition.

The Oscars, as the biggest night in the film industry, provide a prime example of the allure of fame and the desire for validation. Actors, directors, and writers strive for recognition and a chance to take home the coveted golden statuette. However, as I work with public figures, I know all too well that pursuing fame and recognition can come at a cost. One of the main issues with pursuing fame and validation is the pressure to maintain a certain image or level of success.

Social media, in particular, has amplified this pressure, with people constantly striving for likes, followers, and verification. It's important to remember that social media validation is not the ultimate symbol of success. True success is the satisfaction of knowing that we've done our best, pursued our passions, and contributed something positive to the world.

So how can we break free from the cycle of validation-seeking and focus on what truly matters? Here are a few tips:

Focus on your own goals and passions: Instead of trying to impress others or fit into a certain mould, focus on what makes you happy and fulfilled. Pursue your passions and interests with gusto, knowing that true success comes from within.

Connect with others who share your values and interests: Building meaningful relationships with like-minded individuals can be a powerful source of validation and support. Find communities or groups to connect with and others who share your passions and interests.

Practice gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for, whether it's your health, your relationships, or your accomplishments. Focusing on gratitude can help shift your perspective away from validation-seeking and towards a more positive, fulfilling mindset.

Appreciate the journey: Remember that success is not just about the end goal but the journey itself. Celebrate your progress and milestones, and be proud of the hard work and dedication that got you there.

Use humour: It's okay to laugh at yourself and take the validation-seeking culture lightly; of course, it’s great fun to think about the perspective of the little blue verification symbol beside your name. But it makes me laugh at the extent people will go to get recognition for fame! Some people do the silliest things to get the tick. That's why it's good to use humour. It can help diffuse the pressure of constantly feeling like you have to impress others and remind you not to take yourself too seriously.

Ultimately, the Oscars and pursuing fame and recognition simply reflect our human nature. We all want the freebies, the merch, the invites to events - what fun, right? We all want to be recognised and admired for our talents and accomplishments, and that's perfectly natural. But let's not forget that true happiness comes from within, from personal accomplishments, meaningful relationships, and the simple joys of life. By focusing on what truly matters and appreciating the journey, we can break free from the cycle of validation-seeking and find true fulfilment and success through validating ourselves. And remember, what you're doing is enough!

Enjoy the Oscars!
