Golden Globes return; Francis Ford Coppola denies report about ‘Megalopolis’; and more

A few speeches dazzled (shoutout to Jennifer Coolidge and Eddie Murphy), but the return of the Golden Globes on NBC didn’t quite clear the bar, in the view of Deadline’s Dominic Patten. Once a riotous and influential night on the awards season calendar, this year’s edition fell on a Tuesday and felt more tonally uncertain.
One reason for the transitory vibe is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hosts the Globes, has experienced two years of major upheaval. The 2022 ceremony wasn’t held at all as the HFPA worked to address serious issues with diversity (as of 2021, it had no Black members) plus documented accounts of members being wined and dined by Hollywood to an absurd degree.?
NBC opted to resume airing the show but with a one-year commitment, pending the response to its new incarnation. Host Jerrod Carmichael didn’t land every joke, certainly, but his opening monologue pulled zero punches about why he was emceeing the night.?

Speaking to Deadline from the Atlanta set of his film, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola disputed a report in the trade press that indicated turnover in the visual effects and art departments meant the production was a runaway train. The report used words like “peril,” “ballooning budget,” “crew exodus” and “chaos.” Coppola acknowledged some crew shuffles, but said he believes the only high drama he sees is in the dailies.?“I love my cast, I love what I’m getting each day, I am on schedule and on budget, and that’s what is important to me,”?the filmmaker said.
