The Golden Circle: Finding Purpose in Financial Advising

The Golden Circle: Finding Purpose in Financial Advising

Every morning, as you step into your role as a financial adviser, it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers—portfolios, market shifts, and client meetings. But take a moment and ask yourself: Why do I do this? It’s more than just a career; it’s about making a real difference in the lives of your clients. It’s about understanding your purpose.

What Really Drives You?

Simon Sinek’s concept of the Golden Circle is all about digging deeper into why we do what we do. It’s not just about the what—the services you offer, or the how—the strategies you use. It’s about the why—the core purpose that drives you. This isn’t some abstract idea; it’s what sets you apart as a financial adviser.

  • What: This is the logical part of your job. It’s where you analyze the numbers, create strategies, and measure success through tangible outcomes. This is the day-to-day work, but it’s only the outer layer.
  • How: Here’s where you begin to tap into the more intuitive side of advising. It’s not just about the facts and figures; it’s about the way you make decisions, the relationships you build, and the trust you earn. This is where your unique approach comes into play.
  • Why: At the core, there’s the reason you do what you do. Maybe it’s a deep-seated desire to help others achieve financial security, or perhaps it’s the satisfaction of seeing your clients thrive. Whatever your “why” is, it’s what gives your work meaning and keeps you motivated.

Finding Your Ikigai

In Japanese culture, there’s a profound concept known as Ikigai, which translates to “reason for being.” It’s the sweet spot where your passion, skills, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all intersect. For a financial adviser, finding your Ikigai isn’t just a feel-good idea—it’s transformative. It’s about more than just making a living; it’s about doing work that truly matters, both to you and to your clients.

When you discover your Ikigai, you tap into a deeper sense of purpose that transcends the routine tasks of your job. It’s the reason you wake up in the morning with enthusiasm, ready to tackle the day. It’s what drives you to go the extra mile for your clients, not because it’s expected, but because it’s fulfilling.

Building Your Tribe and Bringing Clarity to Your Purpose

When you align your business with your Ikigai, something powerful happens—you start to attract a community of clients who resonate with your purpose. These aren’t just clients; they’re your tribe. They trust you, rely on you, and become advocates for your work. They value the unique perspective and dedication you bring to the table, and in return, they become loyal supporters of your business.

This clarity of purpose also transforms the way you operate. When you’re clear on your “why,” your business gains direction. Decisions become easier because they’re guided by a well-defined purpose. Your work becomes more fulfilling, and the impact you make is magnified. Each interaction with your clients isn’t just a transaction; it’s a step toward creating lasting value.

But the benefits of clarity go beyond just business success. Waking up with a sense of purpose isn’t just good for your clients—it’s good for you too. It brings a deeper sense of satisfaction and well-being, knowing that you’re making a real difference in the lives of others. This, in turn, fuels your motivation and keeps you driven, even on the toughest days.

At the end of the day, understanding the Golden Circle and finding your Ikigai isn’t just a strategy—it’s the foundation of a meaningful, impactful business. It’s about ensuring that every client interaction is guided by a purpose that resonates deeply, creating relationships built on trust, value, and mutual success.

Many years ago I heard about Simon Sinek, read all his books, listened to his Ted Talks & interviews, highly recommended to inspire you to get out of bed in the mornings. Intriguingly Ikigai has been my other source of inspiration from the Japanese Culture to create a sense of being & purpose in life. Some great building blocks for a Financial Adviser to model their business on ????
