GOLD STANDARD MAKES IT EASIER TO FIND CREDITS WITH NEW REGISTRY LABELS

GOLD STANDARD MAKES IT EASIER TO FIND CREDITS WITH NEW REGISTRY LABELS

To help buyers, researchers and other stakeholders identify projects and carbon credits based on their attributes and eligibilities for different markets, Gold Standard has today introduced new ‘labels’ to the Gold Standard Impact Registry .?

The new labels indicate credit and project compliance with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market’s (ICVCMs) Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) and distinguish credits as either emission reductions or emission removals, among other attributes. Updates to Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) labels to distinguish between eligibility for the pilot phase and (subject to approval by ICAO) later phases have also been implemented.???

These new labels are an addition to existing labels related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and verified contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.??

New filtering options are accessible on the front end of the Impact Registry - a publicly available application. Parties interested in supporting Gold Standard projects can filter by attributes including Article 6 authorisation, eligibility for market programmes such as CORSIA, and other specific attributes.??

More details about the different types of labels below and in the related guidance document .??

CORSIA (UPDATED)?

Attribute -?Credits eligible for use by airplane operators towards compliance obligations under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), administered by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).?? Gold Standard credits (vintages 2016 - 2020) are currently approved for use in the pilot phase of CORSIA, where these meet eligibility criteria set forth by ICAO. We anticipate a decision on Gold Standard eligibility under Phase 1 of CORSIA later this year.??

GENDER RESPONSIVE (NEW)

Attribute -?Projects that apply Gold Standard’s Gender Responsive Requirements, under which they must conduct deep gender analysis, select gender-targeted project goals and actions, and design project-specific gender indicators and parameters.??

All projects Gold Standard-certified projects are required to apply Gold Standard’s Gender Sensitive requirements, to ensure a ‘do no harm’ approach and apply safeguards to prevent or mitigate adverse impacts on women, men, girls or boys. The optional Gender Responsive Requirements go further and are a way of identifying projects that have gone above and beyond to have a positive impact on gender.???

This label will allow credit purchasers to easily identify projects that have made significant contributions to gender equality.

??

CORE CARBON PRINCIPLES (NEW)

Attribute -?Credits generated from methodologies assessed and approved as being in adherence with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) to meet its Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework.?

Gold Standard has been assessed by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market to meet its CCPs at the programme level. Certain methodologies approved and in use under Gold Standard have also been assessed and approved as being in adherence to the CCP Assessment Framework.??

GHG IMPACT TYPE (NEW)

Attribute - Credits and projects that have been issued, or are following methodologies under which they would be issued, credits representing greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions or removals.???

In addition to ambitious emissions reductions, emission removals are needed for all scenarios that limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Gold Standard is expanding its GHG removal offerings under its Standard and expects the number of issued credits to increase in the coming years.??

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS?

Attribute -?Quantified impacts achieved by projects towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), verified and certified as part of Gold Standard’s performance certification process.?

All projects certified under Gold Standard for the Global Goals are required to demonstrate a clear, direct contribution to sustainable development, by making a demonstrable positive impact on at least three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including SDG 13 – Climate Action.?

This label will allow registry users to easily identify projects that have made contributions to SDGs they particularly wish to support.??

ARTICLE 6

Attribute -?Credits have been authorised for use by a national government under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.??

Governments hosting project activities can choose to authorise credits for use towards applicable purposes under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, including use towards the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of another country, use towards CORSIA or for other purposes.???

These labels, introduced in 2022, allow registry users to identify credits that are authorised for use under Article 6, the use-purposes towards which the credits are authorised, and to identify if the host government has applied a corresponding adjustment.???

EXPLORE THE IMPACT REGISTRY

This document provides guidance on the attribution of labels to projects and credits listed within the Gold Standard Impact Registry. It is intended for use by registry account holders as well as other stakeholders viewing the public interface of the Gold Standard Impact Registry, to support understanding of when and why labels are attached to projects and credits, and how to filter by labels.
