On Saturday, March 3rd, 2018, I had the incredible pleasure of combining two of my life passions, Special Olympics and The University of Guelph Gryphon Football team when we hosted the 1st Annual U of G Gryphon Football Special Olympics Powerlifting Meet at Alumni Stadium.
The event hosted 30 Special Olympics Athletes from 9 communities in Ontario, their coaches and families along with volunteers from Special Olympics, The Peel Regional Police, Ontario Police College and Gryphon Football Program.
The event was sponsored by the University of Guelph Gryphon Football Team, Adidas Canada and Big Kahuna Sports.
In attendance were 7 members of Team Ontario powerlifting squad who will be attending the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer games to be held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia this summer. The event was officiated by Doug Vair, side judges Brody Arndt & Dave Camilleri.
When the day concluded, the combined bench press, squat and deadlift totals exceeded 15,000 lbs. (same weight as a loaded school bus). There were 27 fist pumps in the air, 5,000 smiles, laughs and hugs and everyone left the event in a better mood than when they arrived.
As I reflect in the day, I was filled with the joy, love, passion and satisfaction of knowing we made history here, and can't wait for next year's event.
