The Gold of Data for the Business Leader
Those of you who know my musings on business matters will sense my increasing desire to help business leaders to use data to drive faster and better decision making.
The need to use data in this manner is not because it is a fashionable thing to do, or that having data will make you a better leader. It is because that over the last 15 years the pace of change and the demands of clients have led to the need to have relevant data that allows us all to make those real time decisions effectively.
And please there is a massive difference between having data for data sake
As business leaders we need data that is able to communicate to any strategic and tactical goals and aspirations of the business. Data that informs us of how the business is supporting its customers, and data that drives processes, productivity and culture within the organisation.
So if you are still not convinced, I want to outline below, how as a business leader, you can harness the gold of good data to catapult your business to higher heights.
It is imperative to use data to qualify gut feel. It will help you to provide objective insights that will help you to make informed decisions rather than relying on intuition or assumptions.
In addition, by analysing data, you can identify potential risks and opportunities, allowing you to make strategic decisions that minimise risk and maximise reward.
2. Performance Measurement
Data allows businesses to track performance metrics over time, helping you and your leaders to understand whether you are meeting your goals and objectives. I always say to business leaders that you should know at least 8 key data points to give you an understanding of whether your business is doing well or not.
So analysing performance data will help you to identify trends and patterns, therefore enabling you to make proactive adjustments.
3. Customer Understanding
Data is essential to help you to understand your customer behaviour, preferences, and needs. I cannot stress the need to have real time data around this. This will allow you to not only react to any issues that they have, but will enable personalised marketing, account management and improved customer service to ensue.
From a marketing perspective to new clients, the ability to use data to segment businesses will allow you to segment your ideal customer more effectively and therefore tailor strategies to different customer groups.
4. Operational Efficiency

If you choose the right data points then it is easy to highlight inefficiencies in business processes, allowing you to streamline operations and so reduce costs. The recent issues globally, of rising energy and material supply costs, have had a massive impact on product and service margins. So having these data points in real time can help to ensure that cash is preserved or new prices can be negotiated and passed on to customers.
Understanding data will help you allocate resources more effectively, ensuring that time and money are spent where they will have the greatest impact. The 80:20 Pareto principle works really well when you have great reliable data. This will allow you to focus on the vital few activities that will impact the majority of issues within your business. And being a super fan of the importance of using innovation in driving business growth, you will find that by analysing data, businesses can identify unmet needs and emerging trends, driving innovation and keeping them ahead of the competition.
6. Financial Management
I will not say too much on this. It is obvious that data is essential for accurate budgeting and financial forecasting. As a business leader it is not good enough to just check the bank account for business financial probity. There are some key data points that are important to get your head around, to allow you to understand trends and so help you to plan for future growth and stability.
7. Employee Performance and Engagement
Measuring the performance of your people is critical for ongoing business performance. Data can be used to track employee performance and productivity, helping you to identify top performers and to focus priorities for areas of improvement.
In addition, do not forget about running staff surveys and feedback data to provide insights into employee satisfaction and engagement. Having such data will allow you to improve workplace culture and so reduce turnover.
By leveraging the gold of data, business leaders can make more informed decisions, improve efficiency, and drive innovation. Data provides a foundation for understanding current performance and predicting future outcomes, and will enable your business to adapt to changing market conditions and customer needs effectively.
