Going green shouldn’t mean a premium price tag for the transport industry.

It is no secret that the planet needs to reduce carbon emissions.? Nor that vehicles fuelled by gas and oil pump CO2 into the atmosphere every minute of every day.

It’s common knowledge that we all seek a better alternative energy source. Green fuels,?whether in the form of fuel-cell hydrogen, electric, bio-LNG or bio-fuels are now understood to have the potential to provide it.? Hydrogen as an example is plentiful, economically becoming viable and emission free.

But unlike wind and solar energy, green fuels remain shrouded by a sense of the unknown.? There’s a lot of theory but little practical implementation.? And, as a result, roll-out has been slow.

That is going to change.??

Arxax view is, simply, that in the next ten years many heavy-duty fleets will be running on a form of green fuel and this doesn't and shouldn't come at an increased cost for trucks, companies or their customers.

What is absolutely crucial is that this roll-out doesn’t repeat the flaws of the oil and gas age.??

Because the inefficiency and waste inherent in the current system are not simply a factor of the fuel itself.

Look at the way refuelling currently takes place.

For example I drive a heavy duty vehicle across Europe.? I have a choice of filling stations every 20km along the way.? Each requires its own infrastructure and creates its own emissions and environmental problems.? Each has multiple fuel pumps.? I can choose a fuel stop to coincide with my mandated rest period, the fuel level in my tank or, simply, because that’s where I prefer the coffee.

This is, clearly, a system that is neither green, efficient nor business critical. As an example of this, the average refuelling station asset utilization rate across the industry is around 15-20 percent; so, 80-85 percent of a refuelling station supply capacity remains untapped.??

This ad hoc refuelling practice also makes an environmentally unfriendly fuel source even more deadly for the planet.?

Since most gas stations were built, our world has been transformed.? Artificial Intelligence and digital routing have matured. This tool kit allows us to think completely differently about where and when to refuel.

Arxax vision is to completely re-engineer the journey for the roll out of green fuels so mistakes are not replicated.

The maximum benefit to freight businesses and the planet will be when the highest number of vehicles can refuel in the smallest number of stations.??

That’s only possible by digitally mapping routes and ensuring that refuelling takes place at the point of maximum efficiency. If we can understand upfront when and where we refuel we can dictate demand and in turn price – this, we believe, is fundamental for mass adoption and something that forms the backbone of our company and associated products.

Digital transformation will be pivotal for a carbon-neutral future of the heavy-duty trucking and logistics industry.

An EU-backed study into fuel cell and hydrogen (FCH) technology published last December, listed lack of automation and digitalisation in refuelling infrastructure as one of the barriers to the technology roll-out in the heavy-duty trucks ecosystem.

It’s a given that we will continue to refuel more vehicles with green fuel options. The wasted opportunity will be if we try to squeeze this new model into the inefficient refuelling habits of the diesel age.
