Going forward, together
Jim Nussle
Chief Executive Officer, AMERICA’S CREDIT UNIONS. Our mission is to advocate for and advance an environment where credit unions thrive.
While a handful of Congressional races across the country remain too close to call, one thing is clear: the CUNA-League system concluded a successful, record-breaking 2020 election cycle with another credit union majority heading into the 117th Congress.
That’s a goal we’ve worked toward since the last election, with CUNA and Leagues conducting hundreds of meetings with candidates to identify and support credit union champions, and more than 90% of our candidates won this week, including in more than 30 open seats.
A full list of results can be found at CUNA.org/elections.
Beyond the results
CUNA experts Ryan Donovan, Richard Gose, and Trey Hawkins broke down what the results mean for credit union priorities in our post-election analysis webinar.
Going forward, the credit union movement needs to come together and work with the new Congress on behalf of our members. Our mission—to promote thrift and provide access to credit for provident purposes—is as bipartisan as it gets.
Even though many of the faces in the next Congress are familiar, it’s incredibly important they hear about what credit unions are doing, and can do, to help our country recover.
Thanks for making your voices heard on behalf of America’s 120 million credit union members.
CUNA Councils launches new website
CUNA Councils successfully launched their new website, CUNACouncils.org, with a new design that makes substantial improvements to both user experience and security. The new site also offers a responsive design for improved mobile viewing. Thanks to all the Council members who participated in the process, we couldn’t have done it without your feedback every step of the way.
Minnesota credit unions among the fastest growing
A shout-out to the Minnesota Credit Union Network, who just released new data showing credit unions in their state increased their growth and reputation in 2020. During the second quarter of this year, Minnesota credit unions were the fastest growing in the country.
One of the standout stats shows that consumers age 18-34 continue to see credit unions’ value in the toughest times. Congratulations MnCUN and Minnesota’s credit unions!
Fair Lending eSchool kicks off Dec. 1
Our Fair Lending eSchool will take place in five online sessions between Dec. 1 and 15. This eSchool will provide valuable insights on regulations such as the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Housing Act, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, and the Servicemembers Civil Relief and how to make sure your credit union is in compliance.
Saluting credit union veterans
CUNA News is working on our 2020 Salute to Veterans, sponsored by FIS, and we’re asking credit union military veterans to tell us their stories about their military experience, what they learned from it, and how their experience has influenced them and their credit union career.
These stories can be told through words, photos, or even video, and can be submitted to news.cuna.org/stories.
360-degree advocacy
- The CFPB finalized its debt collection rule last Friday, and CUNA has released our summary of the rule;
- We told the FCC that TRACED Act commenters overwhelmingly back CUNA’s position to retain certain TCPA exemptions;
- We supported NCUA’s proposed changes to Overhead Transfer Rate and Operating Fee schedule methodology.
- We provided feedback on a proposed CDFI Certification Application and believe it should be reconsidered.
