JR Central is launching a campaign as the Yamanashi Linear Test Line approaches 5 million kilometers of operation. Samsung SDI will participate in 'RE+ 2024', North America's largest energy exhibition, from September 9th in Anaheim, USA. The company plans to showcase various energy storage system (ESS) batteries, including the Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.5, high-output batteries for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The SBB 1.5, set for release in the US this month, features a 37% higher energy density than existing products and a total capacity of 5.26 MWh. It employs embedded direct injection (EDI) technology to enhance fire safety. Samsung SDI will also present high-power UPS batteries with over 40% improved output per rack and a lifespan three times longer than traditional lead-acid batteries, resulting in better space utilisation and reduced operating costs. Additionally, the company intends to highlight ESG initiatives such as LFP battery development targeted for 2026 and strategies for recycling waste batteries. CEO Choi Yoon-ho emphasized the anticipated growth of the ESS market driven by renewable energy and AI advancements, asserting the company’s commitment to strengthening its market leadership.

This announcement coincides with the launch of WattSafe, an electric vehicle battery safety notification service that detects abnormalities and sends safety alerts by analysing data such as temperature, voltage, and current in real-time using AI. The service addresses the growing concern of electric vehicle battery fires, emphasising the importance of early detection of precursor signs. PM Grow also offers WattEver and WattProof services for analysing and certifying the performance of installed batteries. The company plans to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in the first half of next year and is preparing for the listing review application process. Since its founding in 2010, PM Grow has supplied battery packs for over 10 vehicle models and provided battery subscription services.

Hyundai Motor is set to launch its Casper Electric mini SUV in Japan in early 2025, following its introduction in Europe later this year. From January to August 2023, Hyundai sold 28,784 units of the Casper in South Korea, a 1.4 percent increase from the previous year, with significant sales in August, including 1,439 Casper Electric units. If this sales pace continues, Hyundai could exceed its 2022 record of 48,200 units. The Casper Electric will be exported to over 50 countries, tailored for markets with limited parking space and narrow streets. To meet anticipated demand, production targets for the electric model at Gwangju Global Motors have been raised by 40 percent to 23,000 units by year-end. The Casper Electric offers a 315-kilometer range and a larger interior space compared to its gasoline counterpart, utilising battery cells from a joint venture between Hyundai and LG Energy Solutions. Hyundai Motor Company is receiving subsidies from the Japanese government for its electric bus, the 'Elec City Town', marking the first instance of a domestic automaker benefiting from such subsidies in Japan. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) has selected the Elec City Town for a subsidy amounting to 17.69 million yen (approximately 164.63 million won). Hyundai plans to supply five units to the Iwasaki Group by the first quarter of next year, with the first unit scheduled to be delivered as early as next month. If all five units are delivered, Hyundai will receive a total of 88.45 million yen (around 822.75 million won) in subsidies. The Elec City Town is a mid-sized electric bus featuring a 145-kilowatt-hour battery with a driving range of over 220 km on a single charge, and includes various safety and convenience features. Additionally, Hyundai is considering collaborating with local insurance companies to partially support the cost of replacing certain consumable parts.
