Going to College in My Hometown
Me and Some of My Friends I've Met at College

Going to College in My Hometown

Born in Opelika, AL in November 2002, I've lived in Lee County, Alabama my whole life. As high school graduation approached, the big question arose: where to go to college?

Amidst the excitement and anticipation, there was a subtle pressure to follow the somewhat conventional path of leaving home for distant campuses. However, I found myself rooted in the community of my hometown, Auburn.

The prospect of parting ways with cherished traditions like rolling Toomer's Corner after a winning game and the many game-days spent tailgating left me questioning why I should depart from my college hometown.

September 2011

Choosing to stay in Auburn has proven to be one of the most rewarding decisions I've made. Yet, it wasn't without its challenges.

Amidst assurances that college would be the place where lifelong friendships are made, I found myself surrounded by familiar faces from high school. Thus a concern arrose that I might cling to familiarity rather than take the opportunity to expand my social circle.

Fortunately, my involvement in various student organizations such as my sorority, Beat Bama Food Drive, and Women in Business transformed my college experience. Through these avenues, I not only cultivated new friendships but also honed leadership skills.

To those who find themselves in a similar position, living in a college town they hold dear, I offer this advice: embrace your roots. I've thrived in Auburn, and I'm immensely grateful for the bonds I've forged and the memories I've created in my hometown.
