Going Against the Flow
In the process of working on pilot solution in Mexico City, I have had the chance to overlook the Angel of Independence monument. Officially known as Monumento a la Independencia, it is a victory monument in the center of a major roundabout in Paseo de la Reforma.
To say major is an understatement when you consider the eight plus wide car lanes, motorcycles, as well as a few bikes and adventurous pedestrians. That level of difficulty would make even the typical NJ/NY driver pay attention.
What I found more intriguing is the way drivers approach the circle. It is not simply lets all go clockwise and exit out of the circle at the desired turn. We have been there and perhaps have even had to make a loop around as you work your way over to the turning lane. No, they simply go through the circle in the direction of their goal. If your turn is to the left as you come to the circle, you go that way until you can make it across - strong will or more likely a break from the semi-controlling traffic lights at each entrance eventually give you a chance. Sure it could mean you end up going against the flow and hang yourself out. You could also be the one that sets the direction which others will follow. Independence indeed!
This is not to say that it always works smoothly, or quickly. I watched this guy sit for a good bit before he was able to make his move. It looked more Like a salmon heading upstream than a Nissan...but he got through.
As I watched more and more drivers approach the circle, you could see that they made the choice on direction when they got there. Each time was a unique opportunity. As drivers made bold moves and jockeyed for position it resonated with our pilot's intent. We were taking a different approach to solve a problem. Sure, there are going to be delays which you will need to weather. There is most certainly going to be a need to make adjustments as journeys generally do not go in straight lines. There is also a strong need for patience as you have to let things develop.
Again, it made me think of our pilot as no market or opportunity remains constant. If we have learned anything from the game changing moves made by firms completely upending established industries, it is the predictable that is perishable. Here's to looking for unique pathways along the journey.
