There goes my hero...

Dave Grohl was someone many of us looked up to.

He was the phoenix who rose from Nirvana's burnt ashes to create an impressive 11 studio albums and a career path that has inspired countless musicians and fans around the world.

Grohl brought us along for the journey showing there is hope after tragic events like losing your best friend.

That journey hit a huge speed bump in the past few weeks when whatever picture we had of the rock musician was suddenly altered.

It begs the question though, should we put our celebrity heroes up on those pedestals?

Because when these people who seem larger than life disappoint us, it sometimes shakes up our faith in humanity and it begs the question - are there any good people left in the limelight?

For those of us who grew up with Grohl, lead singer of the Foo Fighters, it was more than the sound of a record skip jarring scratch when he revealed he fathered a child outside his 21-year marriage.

Until now Grohl, father of three daughters, has portrayed himself as an incredibly likeable hard-rocking musician who just loves to play great music without any of the bells and whistles other lead singers incorporate into their live and recorded songs. From the book "This is a Call" to his autobiography "The Storyteller," Grohl was seen as one of the few hard-rocking individuals who stood up for the little guy and someone who was focused on his family, even when he was out on the road for long tours.

Even when you take the time to Google the most liked musician out there, Grohl's name pops up time and time again.

Whatever ideas we had of Grohl up to this point all came crashing down when news was revealed he was not so monogamous as we all had hoped. But it begs the question, should we believe our favourite celebrities are infallible?

Awolnation has a great song "Kill your heroes" that reminds us it's sometimes a good idea to bust up these perfect notions of our heroes. Just in case you think I've lost my mind, this notion shared in Aaron Bruno's lyrics, It doesn't mean to actually go out and kill your heroes, so please put that idea out of your mind. It's a saying, it is not to be taken literally. Okay, moving on.

We are all part of the human struggle and we make mistakes along the way. Just like those writers out there who subscribe to the idea of "kill your darlings," when you start putting together a beloved script, sometimes you have to get rid of part of the story to help the overall storyline succeed.

Now at what point does forgiveness come into play with this unravelled story of Grohl with the pages ripped, shredded and discarded on the floor? Whatever point we think that should happen, I'm feeling it will be awhile until we can all shake off the surprising news that jolted us out of our Foo Fighters happy daydream.

At some point we will have to create a newly reimagined collage of the ripped up storybook we had of Dave Grohl and reassemble it into this new idea while lowering the pedestal for all of our favourite heroes out there.

A Monkey Wrench to his image!
