The empire is toured, virgins are found, and the head eunuch of the King Xerxes spends time beautifying them. Then at the king’s pleasure he chooses Esther as queen, and the rest became secondary wives.
It’s within this culture that God brings about his purpose. Using a Jewish orphan named Esther in a situation not of her choosing.
Mordecai enters the scene. He is the man that adopted Esther as a child. Because of her new-found stature, the job as the doorkeeper of the palace becomes his. This placed him in a position to save the king’s life by thwarting a plot to assassinate him. Mordecai’s loyalty allows his name to be written in the Book of Chronicles in the king’s presence.
As the story continues to unfold, Haman is introduced as a court official who plots against the Jews in the kingdom of Xerxes. The result of the threat of persecution will be a great cry out to God by the Jews.
Although Haman hasn’t taken this step yet, God has already taken three steps; Vashti is no longer queen, Esther is the queen, and Mordecai saves the king’s life. These will all be significant events in saving the Jews.
This is a Biblical illustration of God’s promise. That before we call out to Him, He answers. Wickedness is already defeated.
This is your assurance. There are no surprises to God. The church will always survive. This is called God’s providence.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose,” (Romans 8:28).
If God is for us, who can be against us? God has already considered tomorrow.
