God And Mental Health (Part 2)
?
How does Judaism contribute towards mental health?
Two different facets of the contribution are often blurred.
One aspect is how Judaism incorporates all of the facets of basic mental hygiene
This is true but can come across as apologetic to the shifting times
The second aspect is a broader sense of fulfillment, meaning, and purpose.
For now, let’s focus on the first point
Judaism obligates positivity through unconditional love for strangers and judging your fellow man favorably, and faith in God’s design of your life is for your ultimate good.
It forbids jealousy, baseless hatred and other conventional sources of negativity in our relationships and life.
Gratitude is practiced through daily affirmations built into the prayers and through honoring one's parents.
Structure and individual expression is provided through scheduled daily prayers, study sessions, holidays while maintaining flexibility in one’s focus within the framework
Interpersonal harmony, especially in the home, is considered paramount waiving other prohibitions such as lying
This is just a minor surface sampling but enough to get the idea that Judaism and mental health aren’t two different dimensions but irrevocably intertwined
