“Pity the man who inherits a million and isn't a millionaire. Here's what would be pitiful, if your income grew and you didn’t.” - Jim Rohn
Many employees desire to be paid salaries that are above their mind grade. While it is not wrong to desire to be paid more than you are currently earning, it’s an aberration to expect payment more than the capacity you have.
Your salary should be the by-product of your capacity. You can only be able to handle money that either is lower than or equal to your capacity. That's why it’s wrong to desire an increase in salary without first working on expanding your capacity. Without the requisite capacity, you won’t be able to handle the money and also to predictably earn it.
Your capacity determines the value you create and bring to the table. There is no way you are going to earn maximize wage when you have a minimum wage capacity. I mean, you don’t even believe that is possible, do you?
Minimum wage capacity simply means that what you think, believe and do are all geared towards earning you minimum wage. There is no way you are going to earn maximum wage with minimum capacity. If you want to earn maximum wage, then you will need to enlarge your capacity.
Since there is no limit to how large you can grow your capacity, there is no limit to the amount of money you can earn. What you need to do, therefore, to get a raise is to work on your capacity. If you want to triple your income, then double your investment in the expansion of your capacity and capability.
You may be capable but as long as you have a minimum wage capacity, you will never produce value that earns you maximum wage. Of course, public service is exempted from this concept. That's because people’s salaries are increased in two ways: by demand and by time.
By demand means they go on strike and demand an increase in wage. And by time means as they get older, they get promoted to the next grade level and position with a higher pay. These two systems are a great injustice to humanity because they breed mediocrity rather than help people produce the kind of value they are created to create.
What is the need of growth to be all I can be when all I need to have my income increased is to either demand it through strike actions or just be a normal guy and get promoted through time? The best way to increase your salary is by supplying value to your employer. When you expand your capacity, the value you produce and bring to the table will increase.
When your salary is greater than your capacity, it’s a curse. You will never know what you have the potential to produce and earn. Your potential to earn will be limited because your capacity is fixed. This person doesn’t care about who he is but cares about what he earns.
When your salary equals your capacity, you are living in mediocrity and denial of your true worth. It means you are really doing nothing extra to increase your income. You are satisfied with who you are and what you earn.
When your salary is lower than your capacity, you are blessed. That is because the value you are giving to your workplace far exceeds what you are being paid. It’s just a matter of time, your salary and income will rise to equal your capacity. Always make sure that your capacity is far above your salary as an investment in your future.
Your focus should, therefore, be to expand your capacity so that you won’t be at the mercy of your salary.
