God Doesn't Care

Every now and then, I get a client walk though my door who feels so broken that they disconnect from God. Why? Because of the shame and guilt that they live with. Broken eye contact. Stream of tears rolling down their cheeks. My sins are unforgivable.

I was fortunate enough to be raised in the church. But at age 16, I walked away. I spent a few years wandering around trying to find myself. Once I got back on track, I started studying all the faiths and beliefs systems that I could. I went on to pick up a degree in divinity and eventually became a chaplain on a part time basis. Then once again, many years later, I walked away again. My position then is the same as my position now. And that position is that God doesn't care.

"You are forgiven before you even ask."

I don't like to speak for God. God doesn't need my voice. But when a wounded person presents themselves to me, I can speak of my journey, and what I believe to be true. And that is God doesn't care. God doesn't care what you have done. You are forgiven before you even ask. You are worthy of love. You were doing your best. Set down your guilt, because you are free.

These words have been a sore spot for many. But we need to stop judging people for not learning what we have learned, by the time we have learned it. Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle with others. I believe that God does care. God cares about you. Stop keeping score. What matters most is if you're trying today. Please do not define yourself by your past.

I believe that if we all got honest with ourselves, we would find things in our past that we are not proud of. I also believe that if we held onto those things, we could not become the best version of ourselves. Instead of using guilt and shame as a means to hold you down. Try using them as a vehicle to liberate yourself. By acknowledging our imperfections, we release the pressure of trying to be perfect. And when we do this, we are free to be authentic.

God doesn't care about what you've done. God is more concerned about who you become. And with each new sunrise, you have a chance to become your authentic self. Beating yourself up over you past serves no purpose. I believe that the only barrier blocking you from God, is the past that weighs you down today.

You are enough. You are forgiven. And God doesn't care.
