Goblintown Unlikey Success

Something really interesting happened recently I was invited to a new free mint for this thing called Goblin Town WTF, I was curious given the preview of the art. I visited the website for minting and noticed it was an unsecure website meaning it was not using the HTTPS secure protocol and a rule of thumb is to not transact with websites that are not secure, This has since been fixed.

The artwork had me intrigued, I was so interested in what this Goblin thing was and you can see for yourself here. But reading on I noticed a couple of things that made me back off from minting one of these ugly bastards.

Stated clearly on the website:

• No Roadmap
• No Team or about details
• No Utility
• No Discord
• The smart contract wasn't actually written by Goblins (Huge let down)

Those bullet points didn't give me faith that when I connect my wallet to the site I wouldn't get rugged and have my wallet drained. You always want to know who is behind the project and if they are known scammers or legit operators.

There are a lot of scams in the NFT space, but saying that my first thoughts about Goblin Town oh how wrong I was, this little turd nugget turned out to be a diamond in the rough and exploded in the following days to knock off the Bored Ape Yacht Club from the Top selling NFT collection on OpenSea and thats no mean feat. Im not salty about this but I am more impressed with the collection and its own impact on the NFT space.

What impressed me is the wave of Goblin images I started noticing across Twitter, the hashtags, the follow for follow Goblin takeover I was witnessing. I passed up on Goblin town and it took off. The project sold out and prices to buy in to this new trending ugly NFT craze was surging to the moon.

They really stayed in character when building this website and I love it. Projects should have a voice and a vision. I do expect the Goblin craze to continue to grow and Ive since seen they added a burger shack for Goblin holders to feed their hungry monsters by visiting McGoblins here.

I think this is genius, promise no utility no roadmap and then go drop some new stuff for goblins to do more stuff with what was promoted as a useless profile picture.

This will inspire a hundred more copycats and knockoffs like this dodgey brother copycat website here (don't connect wallet) who knows if this is connected at all to the real Goblins. I don't see copycats stopping they are riding the unlikely wave of success that these gross little green nuggets have pumped into the NFT community.?

It's not everyday you see a startup with very unique artwork go from a floor price of zero free mint to as high as 8 ETH.?This really is a standout collection that could mimic the BAYC and see the launch of merch, cafes and more on the back of the Goblin "brand" as Im calling it.

One standard value filter is unique traits for NFTs to have more unique value than others. The trait card doesn't highlight anything that warrants the absurd price for this Goblin NFT example. Usually you want to see traits in the 1-3% range but the Goblins have no ryhme or reason for promoting various Goblins as the most valuable.

See this extract below highlighting one of the most highest priced NFTs in the collection. I'll add the listing price below these traits and you can sweat it out how on earth anyone can pay for that. It's getting a little crazy on OpenSea right now.

?You could really make some money flipping Goblins if you got in early. Also side note Ive never ever thought that I would say Flipping Goblins when referring to NFT projects, 5 points to me. I would hold until it looks like the ceiling has been reached and then consider flipping my Goblins. The associated Goblin projects have mixed valuations with some like Goblin Girlz doing very well and others doing nothing at all.

Community

The NFT fiends are divided. Some think this is a disaster thats going to zero out any day and then there are those who are all in on Goblin town. I am seeing more and more side with the Goblin movement and take very vocal stand against the haters. Personally I like the art and I like what they have done.

The supporters are very vocal very green and all in. I haven't met many people who are on the fence, it's been full hate or full love towards the Goblins. Given the NFT market has been dominated by Punks, Apes and Mutants the Goblin feel was a welcome change.

Who Is Behind Goblin Town?

For most its a mystery and with mystery there comes a lot of speculation. Redditors have been going bananas over this guessing game and all it really is, is a big guessing game because no one has publicly said it was them.

There was word it was the Yuga Labs team based on a very small detail in their investors deck about an unnamed PFP project. It's not Yuga Labs is my personal opinion.

And then...........Beeple piped up and made this tweet claiming he was the creator. But was quickly shot down as false by the official Goblins Twitter profile confirming its not Beeple.

In short no one knows who is behind this project and its been a well guarded secret. Given the success maybe this is part of why it shot up so rapidly. In a bear market time when all you see is red candlesticks its a little hope that a no name, no utility, no roadmap picture for profile project could get peoples backing and surge so hard in such a short amount of time.

Heres a snapshot of this collections performance from OpenSea. From a free to mint project to a floor of E6.197 you have to wonder why these ugly little goblins became such a runaway success.

Goblins toppled BAYC and spawned a multitude of spinoffs You can see OpenSeas most popular leaderboard here shows the people have Goblin fever. Normally its Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape yacht Club, Otherdeed for Otherside sitting perched at the top.

What are these Goblins and what do they look like?

In short these are a PFP collection of ugly goblins that instantly grab your eye and make you curious to find all the unique traits. There will be no cover models in this collection. Each Goblin has just a few hidden and not so subtle traits that make you want to go back and check every inch of detail. I know Ive been studying my mutant Goblin finding new things every time I look. The ugliness is what attracts.

There are some spinoffs

Disclaimer do your own research. I don't know and I don't think anyone knows what spinoff NFT collection is officially related to the main Goblins collection. The spinoffs are coming thick and fast and I urge anyone getting on the Goblin train to be careful connecting their funded wallet to any Goblin website without at least reviewing whats on offer and by who.

You can see Goblin Girlz is crushing the price point right now. The girls are as offputting to look at as the Goblins core collection. But each collection hides a lot of small detail in each NFT image

Goblin Girlz has really caught fire and theres a big push from women NFt collectors on this individual collection and its great to see a spinoff catch fire from the heat of the core project.

Did I catch Goblin fever? yes I did and once I started digging into why this caught so much fire I was pretty much following every new Goblin Inspired release to see if they were going to catch fire as well.

I really liked the Mutant Goblin artwork and picked up a couple of Mutants. The art is very cool and it does make you wonder who was behind the artwork even if they didn't create the project who did this eye catching artwork. You can normally find them on Behance dribble or other designer based portfolio sites leaking their current projects but not this one its been zero traces of the artist.

Oh and very early hours on Sunday 5th June I picked up x2 Goblin companion dogs in cheap mint limited to 5 per wallet. This was a very smooth process and for me not dropping a big bag on the core collection I'm happy with a Baby Goblin, a Mutant Goblin and my Goblin dogs for now my precious.

The description for goblin dogs WTF is "Grkmgg you asked who is Goblin best friend! Woof woof goof goof CC0"

You can see that less than 24 hours later people are starting to raise the floor on these pets with some selling their Goblin dogs from 1 ETH and below. This is not going to be a breakout collection but it will definitely make owners who got in quick some money.

UPDATE 7.6.22 on Goblin Dogs: This is a Rug pull, Dogs have been removed from OpenSea. No trace of them on other marketplaces, But several new Goblin Dog variations have spawned on OpenSea. Ill report these as the smart contracts look identical to the ones issued for the original Goblin Dogs. Thats a damn shame but highlights the fact that you never know.

So with all this said you can see there is something behind this project thats given it that magical touch. The official creator has been silent but has technical prowess and a sense of humour. This project will continue to rise and give birth to more projects based on my analysis, we also have zero insight on what the creator wants to do with the Goblins in the future.

If you wanted to get in on the Goblin train I would suggest starting with baby Goblins NFTs while its still quite fresh. The early birds train on the main Goblin NFTs has well and truly left the station. Props to the source of this creative image.

I think that the creator really caught everyone off guard with this, I thought the website was clever, the Goblin language used was spot on, even the funny text they use on Instagram adds an extra touch. This was a very clever and very well planned and executed release. Props to you mysterious Goblin master who ever you are and where ever you may be.
