Which One Is Important? Goals or Purpose
One important essence of clarity is being able to define and understand the two. Every leader ought to think strategically and to think strategically, a leader must know the difference between these two ultimate essential concepts in life and business.
During my work, I noticed a majority of people in management and leadership roles were not sure of the exact difference between the two concepts and they often use these interchangeably.
We as a nation must know that Purpose (Maqsad in Urdu) is more important than a Goal, way more important!
A few examples will make it clear.
1. Goal is to pass a university exam and get a degree. The purpose is to really get EDUCATED. If the purpose is not achieved, the GOAL means nothing.
2. When getting married, the Purpose is to start a healthy, prosperous and a happy family. To achieve this PURPOSE, a goal of bringing a woman to your home is met. If purpose is not achieved, goals lose their value (that is why people get divorced).
3. The Purpose of developing all defense forces, mechanisms, weaponry and technology is to SECURE our people, our lands, our kids and families and protect their life’s and economic interests. If the purpose is not fulfilled, and repeatedly not being fulfilled as evident from the history, there is no USE of creating the finest 5th generation fighter aircrafs, or best tanks or missiles or even becoming a Nuclear Power in the world, if your goals DO NOT help achieve your purpose.
4. The Purpose to create Pakistan, was to create a Sovereign Free State which could make its own independent decisions in the best interests of its people. If the purpose is not achieved, the goal to create a separate bordered land remains incomplete.
5. Nations get OBLITERATED, when their goals become important than their PURPOSE.
Most importantly, goals can change, vary, increase or decrease in volume, till the purpose is achieved.
Haven’t you all read or heard the famous anonymous quote, “we lost the battle but the war is still there to be fought?” A goal may temporarily be lost or diminished or needed to be changed without a sense of loss, if the purpose remains intact and in our sight.

Goals are UNFINISHED, not done, not yet achieved until the PURPOSE is.
Never given in, till the purpose is achieved.
See things clearly, with clarity.
