Let’s talk about goal-setting. I’ve struggled with traditional models, finding them too rigid and almost devoid of the humanity that enriches our journeys. They predominantly emphasize the end result, often neglecting the nuanced, vibrant process that constitutes our lives.
In my own experience, this relentless pursuit of achievement can lead to burnout and subtle resentment. It's no wonder so many have retreated from setting goals altogether. Thankfully, recent trends in coaching have been a breath of fresh air, introducing alternative frameworks that embrace a more receptive, feminine approach. Instead of simply chasing outcomes, these perspectives encourage us to set intentions that invite curiosity and reflect on our innate wisdom. We need both masculine and feminine energies.?First, we must be receptive and open to the messages within. ?From here we can create harmony between the two, which allows for intentional, aligned action.
At a recent Global Ethics Day event, Harvey Seifter from the Art of Science Learning highlighted essential qualities of self-leadership: authenticity, reflection, self-awareness, imagination, an openness to multiple viewpoints, and the critical need to align our actions with core values. This got me thinking: when do we truly allow ourselves to be open, curious, and explore the myriad possibilities before us? When we shield ourselves from this openness, we risk drifting away from daily actions that resonate with our true selves. Life’s hectic currents can easily drown out the subtle nudges that guide us toward our authentic desires. I’ve realized that without carving out moments for reflection, pursuing what I want can become a tiring uphill climb — and I can lose interest fast.
Simon Sinek wisely emphasizes that meaningful, aligned action stems from understanding our "why." With self-awareness as our navigational compass, we can recalibrate our course when needed.
So, how do we cultivate this essential reflection? What tools do we have at our disposal to anchor our focus on what genuinely matters? One resource I passionately endorse is the Motivational Map? process, which helps my clients clarify what energizes them, ensuring their actions align with their priorities. This exploration into our personal energy sources is crucial to our journeys.
As an entrepreneur, I’ve discovered the powerful motivation that comes from forging my own path. Many entrepreneurs who complete their Motivational Map? have a high 'Spirit' motivator that led them to become entrepreneurs and not have to answer to someone else. Yet, I’ve also learned that too much freedom can breed aimlessness. By introducing a touch of structure we can enhance the very freedom we treasure.
As an Enneagram teacher, I also prioritize connecting with my three centers of intelligence: the body, heart, and head. This practice allows me to check in with myself, observe what may be missing in my day, and notice when I'm not fully present to those larger aspirations.
In pursuing effective organization, I’ve found tremendous value in planners. Back in my corporate days, I juggled a multitude of planners—a large desktop calendar, a portable notebook that merged my personal and professional lives, and various digital formats. Even in this digital age, I still gravitate toward paper. There’s something intimately grounding about physically jotting down my thoughts.
