Goal Setting that ACTUALLY Works!
All right - so it’s the start of the new year AND the new decade. It’s also the time of the year where everyone creates their 2020 New Year's resolutions and goals.
The most common resolutions tend to be around health, wealth and giving more. But most people’s resolutions or goals never get achieved and I believe there are a few reasons for that.
So I'm going to run through those reasons and give you some tips on how to make your New Year's resolution stick and make you feel good about yourself.
Tip 1 - Specific
The number one tip to making a New Year's resolution actually work is making the goal very specific.
If you want to hit a goal, you need to make it specific.
Example - “I want to lose 10 kilos by July 1” So you have six months to lose 10 kilos, and then you can break that goal down into month, week, day.
It's a lot easier to track that goal than just saying, "I want to lose weight." It's not going to work, because you never know when you're going to hit that target.
Tip 2 - Measurable
Number two, is having a goal that's measurable. Following on from tip one, it's being able to measure where you are in terms of the end goal. So you know if you're two months into your six-month goal where you have to be at, and if you're not at that point, you know you have to change something or try harder so you can hit the goal by the set date.
Tip 3 - Achievable
Number three is making the goal actually achievable. It's not going to do you any favours coming into the new year with a shit diet or financial state and thinking because the calendar now says 2020 miracles are going to happen. Making it ambitious but still actually achievable will help you stay on track when you see yourself getting closer to achieving it.
Because if it is not achievable, all you're going to do is get halfway through it, realize you can't achieve the goal, get disheartened and then all of a sudden go off track, which is what a lot of people do.
Tip 4 – Relevant
Tip number four is having a goal that's actually relevant to you, because the majority of people set their goals based on what other people are doing, but if its not relevant to you, then I don't think that should be a goal you should be looking to achieve. Because, like I said, you're going to get halfway through that goal and then realize that you're not passionate about it, you don't really want to do it, you're probably only doing it to impress someone else and you're going to lose that driving factor.
You need something that's relevant to you and that you're actually going to feel happy and more motivated as you get closer to that goal, it has a massive impact on achieving it.
Tip 5 – Time Frame
Number five is actually having a time frame for your goal; because I if you just say, "It's January 1, I want to achieve it by the end of the year," you don't actually know where you're at with your goal. So having a time frame set in stone "I want to achieve it by X date," then you can break that goal down into months and days. As you're moving through it, you're going to have KPIs set for your self so you know that you're on track to hit your goal by the set date.

5 年Great tips mate! With my clients I add two more; 1. find your emotional attachment to your goal. It makes it easier to achieve your goal and harder to give up. 2. Review & read your goals every day. This way your goals are front of mind everyday and you are more likely to ask yourself how is this activity today getting me closer to my goal - moving the needle forward.
