My 5 Criteria for Goal Setting - 2019
How are you spending this final day of 2018? I'm spending it assessing all aspects of my life over the past year and working on goals for the next. For me, it's important to pause and think deeply about my failures and accomplishments. I can use failure as a motivation, but that is difficult for me. It works, but it doesn't come naturally. Personally, my most powerful source of motivation is positive motivation. I am most motivated when I have actually tasted some success and am making progress.
Oftentimes, at the end of a year, I fail to realize how much progress I've actually made. Therefore, one of the best things I can do on this New Year's Eve is count and savor my successes. It only makes me MORE hungry for things to come.
I have 5 criteria for setting my goals. They must be:
1. Reasonable, yet lofty. They must be acheivable, yet they must be audacious enough that acheiving them will be exhilerating.
2. Effective. If I acheive them, they must always be effective in pushing me towards being the person I truly want to beocme.
3. Measurable. What gets measured gets managed. I need to know if I am acheiving them or not without any doubt.
4. Good for me AND good for my loved ones. I will not set goals that might be to the detriment of my loved ones.
5. Memorable. I must be able to commit them to memory so I can easily review them everyday.
Do you have criteria for how you set goals? What do you think of mine? Please leave a comment. I'm interested in learning from others.
Happy New Year!

6 年Thanks for these helpful insights, which have set me thinking. Based on my weaknesses and strengths, I'll add that my goals need to be persistent at the macro level but flexible at the micro level, remembering that Jesus was sure of his mission and method, but willing to be interrupted on his journeys, nudged by his mother at Cana, forgiving when people failed him, generally patient and peaceful regarding the timing of things, and economical in the use of words when they were going to be neither sufficient nor effective, or when asking a question was going to help people more than giving an answer, Thanks for the question! Grace and peace to you and yours in 2019.
