Goal Posts are Moving for Battery-Electric Vessels

Battery-electric can provide power and propulsion for smaller vessels, be part of hybrid systems or simply be used to store onboard energy.

The initial focus for marine Lithium-ion batteries was on the race for Higher Energy Density coupled with a demand for Lower Costs.

The goal posts are shifting as battery-electric vessels move from concept to on-water operations. At sea the main drivers are Safety and Reliability.

Safety for electric vessels is not only about high performance batteries

A systems approach considers vessel layout, installation of components, maintenance and onshore charging. An integrated plan is essential for both new builds and refits.

Marine operators need to manage the risk of running out of energy

Operators on rivers, estuaries and at sea monitor battery performance to maximise vessel range. Condition monitoring is also part of vessel safety and fire prevention.

Ports, marinas and local authorities need new fire fighting capabilities

To address the burning issues we have brought together an outstanding team of experts with real world experience - both inside and outside of marine.
