Goals that are significant in size often take quite some time to accomplish. Breaking such a goal down into distinguishable segments, a technique of creating milestones, can make the pursuit less intimidating and increase our chances of goal accomplishment.
Striving toward long-term goals requires dedication, discipline, and mental fortitude. We might find it challenging to maintain motivation for an extended time. Long-term goals are often personally inspired and meaningful, with emotional importance to the person who has set them.
Creating milestones to segment the substantial steps of the goal also gives us a chance to reflect on the accomplishment of that step. We should take time to consider what went well and what could have gone better. Before moving forward, we can apply what we learned to the next milestone segment.
Milestone celebrations are also a great way to recognize what has been achieved thus far and generate momentum for the future! These celebrations don’t have to be a 5-star affair or cost extravagant amounts of money. They can be a simple five-minute time to relax, congratulate yourself, breathe in and breathe out, and then get up to keep going.
This week, I successfully defended my dissertation proposal with my committee. Shortly after our meeting, I took a few minutes to reflect on and celebrate this significant milestone in my DBA journey. My long-term goal of becoming Dr. Horner has been broken down into eight significant milestones, with just two more remaining! While I’ll never turn away from a loud, sparkly celebration, this quick reflection was a fabulous way to congratulate myself on my progress and generate the energy needed for the next steps.
What goal are you considering, which could be broken down into milestones? Start by outlining the goal into significant segments. Once your segments have been drafted, give each section an intended completion date. ?
