Goal Environments – 5 Ways to Fix Your Growth Limitations

A goal environment is the spectrum of possibilities available in any given situation. For example, if you plan to explore a career in law, your goal environment for a goal like “I want to be a partner at ABC law firm” would be the things you must do in your current situation to position yourself to become a partner.?

Understanding the goal environment is the first step in expanding your possibilities. When I talk to young professionals about their ambitions, I hear a lot of abstract goals based on a section of someone else’s history. This in itself is not bad. But my next question to them is, What do you need to do to get there? And this is where the conversation goes quiet.?

Most believe that everything will work out well for them when they stick with certain success principles like hard work, consistency, integrity, etc. While these principles are preconditions to achieving any goal, it is essential always to understand the limiting variables surrounding your opportunity at any given time.

I got into a conversation with a mid-level salesperson who showed a lot of promise. His goal was to hit C-level in the next five years. As usual, I asked him to walk me through his plans. While he was confident, he struggled to share a workable plan.

To help him get to an actionable plan, I got him to answer the following questions:

  1. So your company promotion policy allows for one promotion every two years; write down a few achievements that would make the company ignore the policy and promote you regardless.?
  2. You currently have a boss. There are two ways to grow; either he leaves the position to make space for you to grow into, or you outgrow him. If you must outgrow him, write down a list of achievements that could make the boss of your boss or anyone higher up believe you deserve to be at your boss’ level or better?
  3. Since what you want is so high up, you can be sure many people want the same. If your company decided to recruit anyone across the globe and pay whatever the person demands, would you still be the preferred candidate or at least have all the qualities they want at the end of the interview?
  4. Write down everything that is currently stopping you from achieving Questions 1-3 above.?
  5. Write down what you must do to overcome Question 4.

Most people are stuck because their goal environment is hinged on the outcome of their bosses' performances. While the questions above may vary depending on your situation, understanding the concept of a? growth environment gives perspective to how you should think about your growth plans.?

If a few people only desire the goal you set, there is the likelihood it is not big enough. On the other hand, if you believe it is big enough, you must constantly assess your goal environment to identify the limiting factors.?

As always, I'd love to read your thoughts on this - questions and contributions. Let's keep the conversation going!

This was the first piece I read in my mail today and it has helped me to have a shift in consciousness about growth and growth environment. It seem to be all that I needed because I have been at a crossroads lately trying hard to figure out what growth would mean to me. I've got a few assertions and this piece just echoed that solace of assertion. Even as an undergraduate student, I am thrilled to take my growth beyond the four walls go the University, challenging the barriers that I have unconsciously and subconsciously placed as a lid towards my own growth. Thank you for blessing us from your pool of knowledge, it's indeed appreciated.

This is a thought provoking and brain tasking post. I had to go through some lines twice to fully grasp the message. But my takeaway from the post is the importance of never basing ones judgment on just external factors but to focus on self and continue to prepare for all opportunities within and beyond our immediate environment . In fact by going the extra mile to invest in self and appropriating the right goals, this could by itself create opportunities outside our immediate realities.
