Goal Achievement Best Practices

Overcoming Setbacks on the Path to Goal Success

Have you heard any of these common myths about achieving your goals?

Myth #1: Tracking progress is a waste of time.

Myth #2: Accountability is unnecessary when working towards your goals.

Myth #3: Goals will naturally be achieved without any monitoring.

But here's the truth – effective progress tracking and accountability are key to achieving your goals. Curious to know more about these goal achievement best practices? Keep reading to find out!

Effective Progress Tracking and Accountability

I cannot stress enough the importance of tracking your progress towards your goals and the power of accountability and a solid support system to keep you on track. Finding an accountability partner, coach, or going public with your goals are a couple of easy ways to keep yourself motivated and focused. You can also join a peer accountability or study group to create accountability with others.

There are several ways to make and track progress towards your goals, and it can be as simple as taking advantage of small moments in your day to make one more phone call or ask for a referral. However, for the best results, I recommend blocking off intentional time to reflect on your progress and plan for your goals through my designated reflection practices such as The Friday Ritual, Month-End Goal Review, or Quarterly Review. You can sign up for my email list by clicking here to receive a monthly reminder to conduct your month-end goal review.

Time Management

Time management is also important when it comes to goal achievement. We've all been guilty at some point of saying, "I just don't have time." It's an easy phrase to toss around when we're feeling overwhelmed and overloaded by life's numerous demands. However, when it comes to our goals, these five words can be a real roadblock. We need to ask ourselves why we feel we don't have time – is it fear, lack of confidence, or poor time management?

Make the most of small moments throughout the day, and when it’s possible – delegate! Recognizing that we don't always have to be the one in control can free up a surprising amount of time. Identify where you can focus on getting A’s, B’s, and C’s in order to prioritize your time more effectively as well.

Having time isn't about finding a hidden stash of extra hours in the day – it’s about intentional and thoughtful time management.

Implementing a Bounce Back Plan

It gets tough on the goal achievement journey, so we need a bounce back plan to recalibrate when things inevitably don’t go as planned. However, putting a bounce back plan into action doesn’t necessarily require radical transformation or a huge amount of effort, it's about implementing small steps consistently towards your well-being and your goals. Sounds doable, right?

It’s about finding something that makes you feel good and taking a notable step away from the negative mental narratives that start to arise when we aren’t making the progress we’d like to be making towards a goal. It can include anything from going on a walk to setting up a prospecting meeting – whatever shifts your energy and prompts proactive behavior to counteract challenging days.

I hope these best practices serve you well on the goal achievement journey and remember that goals aren’t set in stone – it’s okay to pivot and recalibrate. The path we’ve set out on isn’t necessarily the path we need to continue on. Are your current goals still serving you or do you need to change your focus and direction?
