Go Where The Energy?Flows

Over the last few weeks, things have been going really well business wise. Deals have landed, relationships are being built and partnerships are being formed. I couldn’t have imagined all this would be happening so quickly.
But today was a little different. Today, October 29th, 2018, I spoke at a financial planning firm in Massachusetts. It felt amazing to be in front of a group of people that were eager to learn, take notes and grow their business.
I get so much energy from speaking — it’s actually kind of euphoric in nature. I feel on top of the world. The main reason why this is, is because I’m able to actually see the impact I’m having on people rather than hoping I am through the content I’m producing (like this article). The advisors were asking questions, sharing ideas, telling stories and they were full of energy. It was great and their energy passed through them onto me just like my energy passed through me onto them.
On the ride home, I was so happy. Then I started thinking, “Wow, it’s been a while since I had this feeling, why is that.” Well I’ll tell you why — I hadn’t had a speaking engagement in over two months. That’s two months of me producing content and not being able to see first hand the impact it was having just by seeing the facial expressions of the people I was impacting. That’s two months of me not showing my face to a LIVE audience. That’s two months of me not shaking hands with my target market.
So what I realized is that I get the most amount of energy in front of people. I get the most energy when I am shaking hands, having conversations and hearing the feedback form the crowd.
This can be applied to anything really. What brings you energy? Is it client meetings, speaking, writing, socializing, family, friends? Whatever it is, try to be self aware as you are in that moment and try to measure your happiness. Once you found your thing, make sure you are constantly exposing yourself to that thing. Do that consistently. Do that as often as you can.
This will give you the energy you need to do more than you initially set out to do. It’s OK to go around filling everyone else’s “cup” but you also have to make sure you are getting your cup filled as well. If not, you may feel burnt out, tired and not motivated to go out and do what is needed to achieve what you know you are capable of.

6 年Great article David! I know exactly how you feel about producing content and having no idea about the effect it is having on your audience. For what it’s worth, I think you’re content has been fantastic and have been sharing it with others. Keep up the great work!
