Go to the Mattresses

Yes, I said it. I quoted The Godfather- and if there was any year that this saying would pertain to most (for now anyway) its 2023. The job market has been a tough one for many. We see it in the recruitment industry. I have more people in my network looking for work than I have jobs to give them. It's stressful and I'm sure discouraging to be out of work for 6 months or longer. Rejection after rejection isn't helping. What this tells me is that the "suitor" (aka company) has a lot to pick from. Especially well known, sought after companies.

The good news is that companies big and small have been and will continue to hire. It's finding the right match. A square peg - round hole cannot be forced. I do believe in timing too. There is a job out there for everyone.

Until then- Go to the Mattresses.

What does that look like for the time period we are going through?

  1. Staying close to your network
  2. Connecting with people at the companies you want to work for
  3. Business events- have a contact card or portfolio ready
  4. Additional education- extra courses, online through a university or even LinkedIn
  5. LinkedIn activity- post, like, comment and share. If you really want to get yourself out there, do a LinkedIn live with a creator or on your own.

Basically, stay busy and sell yourself. Just like when you aren't looking for love- it finds you? Same for a job. Yes keep applying, connect with recruiters and make sure your resume is visible on Indeed, CareerBuilder and Glassdoor. Advertise. Advertise. Advertise.

And in the meantime- learn something new, get social and be pursued.

Just like Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail I never understood the term nor used it. And yet here I am. It's a weird market out there but we've got this- the tide will turn.

While you wait just Fight- Fight- Fight.
