I often get various celebrities, rappers, and professional athletes stopping by my office at 10X Headquarters.
Recently, baseball star Matt Joyce was the latest one to come in.
Here’s a sample of what we talked about on the topic of what it takes to get to that next level—in sports OR business:
Uncle G: When did you know you were going to play professionally and get paid to play a game?
Matt: I didn't really KNOW I was going to make the big leagues until Triple-A.
I was in the Minor Leagues for 3 years, and the minor leagues are the real grind because you're sitting on bus rides for 12 hours, you're staying in Best Westerns and crappy hotels.
So, from about age 20 to 23 I was trying to get to the big leagues. But once I made Triple-A I knew I was going to get there.
Uncle G: What happened when you finally made it?
Matt: I went from playing in front of 2,500 people to 40,000. It was Thursday night baseball, we were playing the Red Sox and the game was on ESPN. My legs were shaking.
I couldn't feel my legs. I'm thinking...
“I’ve got to perform tonight. I've got to get a hit tonight. I’ve got to do something great.”
I was driving a 99 Honda civic because I just came from the Minors and pulled into the parking lot next to Jaguars and Range Rovers. You get a little shocked, a little star-struck.
DO I really belong here?
I walked into the clubhouse, guys don’t even look at me. Like, who is this little young punk?
It’s not easy to get to the big leagues, and it’s even harder to stay there.
Uncle G: What did you do to stay in the Major Leagues so long?
Matt: In baseball, you fail a lot. You know, most of the Hall of Famers are failing 7 out of 10 times at-bat. You have to really be mentally tough to be successful in baseball.
Uncle G: When did you have your breakout?
Matt: At first I was hot, hitting some home runs, playing well...and then they started finding my weakness and then started attacking my weakness.
You see, once you get on the radar they start studying you. When you first go in, they don't know anything about you. You have no notes. Once you’re in the Major leagues for a while, they have all the information, they know more about you than you know about you. They know how to attack you—how to pitch you.
So, they're just looking for your weakness, everybody's looking for your weakness. And that's where they're attacking you. It's tough!

Uncle G: Baseball is like making a sales call. Maybe you failed at the last 8, but can you still have confidence for the next one?
Matt: Exactly, can you keep your confidence in the face of failure?
In baseball, you play every single day, like 180 or 200 games a year when you count Spring Training. And it’s a grind, especially if you’re failing.
The same thing as in business, that grind can wear on you, especially if you're not hitting the goals you want to.
Uncle G: How do you stay fresh?
Matt: I like to listen to stuff to always keep learning...so a lot of it comes back to routine. Have your routine and keep showing up and having a good attitude.
Uncle G: How do you plan for a transition after the game?
Matt: I was really fortunate enough to take those long bus rides in the minor leagues and start reading and, and a couple of books really impacted me about money and making money. So, I started investing in real estate when I was 24 years old I think real estate is one of the best investments you can make.
Want to learn about the same real estate investments I discussed with baseball star Matt Joyce?
