With the talks of Uber-eats and Swiggy merging it appears that food delivery ecosystem in India is heading to a consolidation phase where we only have 2-3 key players sharing the pie between them. A lot of startups have tried their luck at this business model in the past 3-4 years and while some like Swiggy and Zomato succeeded others were not as fortunate.
A similar trend is also expected in the B2C grocery delivery segment in the coming months as we can already see smaller companies either winding up or being absorbed by bigger players.
The latest buzz in the Indian startup industry seems to be around building B2B marketplace for Horeca businesses as there are numerous existing inefficiencies in the supply chain which can be solved by the use of technology. The industry is also breaking the shackles of "Tradition" and is embracing technology/online ordering for better margins, reducing waste and scaling.
There are currently multiple players in the Indian market offering solutions for connecting farmers, principal suppliers directly with restaurants, hotels, retailers and thus eliminating the middlemen. Hyperpure by Zomato, Ninjakart, JumboGrocery, Smerkato, EZKirana, Udaan, Jumbotail, SuperZop, ShopKirana are few of the names in the market. While most of these are early-stage startups, this idea is certainly drawing attention from the VCs and PE firms who have been placing their bets for some time now. With the recent news of Tiger global putting in $90m in Ninjakart it appears that investors are still very bullish about this sector.
Indian market is not alone to witness the Food-Tech revolution and not so far way in Indonesia a similar business opportunity and economic dynamics exist. GO-FOOD from GO-JEK was the first to create disruption in food delivery space in Indonesia and has been the dominant player for the last 3 years with $2 billion in GTV.
Taking inspiration from India, we at GO-JEK also decided to diversify into building a B2B marketplace through our new offering GO-FRESH. This venture is for supplying fresh ingredients to over 400k merchants on our platform and providing them with benefits in terms of cost, quality, and reliability.
We have been piloting with GO-FRESH for some months now to figure out the optimal business model, forge relationships with suppliers, streamline the operational & business processes and we now feel that we are ready to scale this business. We are already clocking in over $400k in monthly GMV and are targeting a 10-15x by the end of the year. This is still peanuts when we compare it to a national addressable market of $250m per month and hence we see a massive growth opportunity for GO-FRESH in the coming years.
We strongly believe that technology will be a key driver to scale this business and thus are building a product team for GO-FRESH. We are currently looking for engineers across various disciplines- Backend, Frontend and QA to join our team and be a part of this journey.
