Go Boldly: Take The Next Step
Times of change create opportunity. Graduations are just that. For millions of students around the world, the coming months will spark change and choices. It is an exciting time that can also feel daunting. I’m sharing a few principles that have served me well as I’ve navigated my career. I’m sharing them in case they can serve others too:
- Set priorities, and think about what it is you are solving for. If life were an equation, what is your objective function? It will likely mean trying to accomplish different things with different time frames. You can achieve most anything you want, but it is hard to do everything at the same time.
- Think about the big picture. You may take a job in a particular industry or function, but remember that all industries and all functions matter and are interconnected. Think about it from the perspective of a leader and connect your job to making a difference at the company and in the world.
- Find mentors. Identify people who can share their experiences and help you navigate along the way. Look for mentors within your company, outside of your company and importantly, think about how you can share back with them.
My last tip: celebrate. Take the time to pause and absorb this moment. Change is on its way, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop to enjoy and appreciate all you have accomplished. Congratulations!
