Go big or go home. My Un-carrier? journey from part-time retail sales to big-time B2B professional.

In my 10-years with the Un-carrier, I’ve gone from working part-time sales as a high schooler, to a business sales executive managing million-dollar accounts. Every step of the journey has been about learning how to stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start getting excited about what could go right.

Rewind to the 18-year old me, working part-time at a T-Mobile kiosk in the mall. I had no wireless experience, but in two years I learned a lot about the industry, customer service, and how to be a great salesperson. T-Mobile’s commitment to their customers and employees made it a great long-term career move for me, so I applied for a part-time role within a retail store. Within just one year, I had the top results in the whole market – as a part-timer! And people noticed.

I was ready to go full-time, and applied for an Associate role at a new store that was opening. I didn’t get the job. Instead, the manager said: “We’ve heard your story and we love what you do – your passion and energy.” They offered me a Retail Sales Lead role, and you better believe I took it. In fact, one of my proudest achievements was helping build out the team and opening the store.

A few years went by, and I was able to turn another very small store into a big success on the small business side. We went out to strip malls and invited business owners to come to our store for better wireless. A T-Mobile Business Specialist saw what I was doing and said, “You’ve got to apply to a Business Specialist role!”

I went onto T-Mobile’s career site – and applied to the WRONG POSITION. I accidently applied for the B2B Account Executive role. When I told me friend, he said, “Do you know what you’re doing? That’s a really scary, hard-core position. It’s ‘go big or go home.’”

I could have stayed where I was, but I wanted a bigger challenge, so I went for it – and got the job. That was three years ago. Since then, I’ve learned and done so much. In retail, the customers come to you. In Business Sales, no one’s coming to you. You’ve got to figure it out on your own. I had to learn to embrace those “no’s” and see them as getting me one step closer to a “yes” – and it worked. In my first year, I earned the number one spot in the Philadelphia region, and I’m not about to slow down.

T-Mobile for Business truly sets you up for success with big sales territories, great tools, and a support system that works hard to help you win and keep the business. Case in point: one of the biggest wins of my career was when I went in to pitch the top casino in Pennsylvania. Walking through the executive hallways, it felt like a scene straight out of Oceans Eleven! I presented the Un-carrier story inside a majestic conference room, and suddenly, the whole place lighted up in magenta when I started the video. They were ready to say “yes,” but there was a hitch: We had to put an antenna system within their facilities. When I found out it could take up to a year to complete that kind of work, my heart sank. The deal was falling apart.

I went back to our engineering team and made my case for this deal. In the end, they came through in total Un-carrier style, installing it in record time. I still manage that account, and am proud that we save them over $100,000 a year versus the other guys.

The unlimited earning potential with T-Mobile for Business has made a big difference in my life, enabling me to buy a second house, go on great vacations, and—most importantly—afford the perfect engagement ring for my fiancé. Not too shabby for a kid who started at a shopping mall kiosk.

Nice story. I enjoyed my time at Tmobile. I remember working a few shifts with you at the Featsrville Pa. store. T-mobile helped mold me and now that I am a ER trauma nurse, I thank T-mobile for the 5 great years it gave me as an employee there.
