"GO FOR IT"?

"GO FOR IT"

One year ago, today I started as an Integrated Sales Manager (GSM) at Cox Media Group Atlanta. It was the best decision I have ever made professionally and personally. But it wasn’t the easiest decision.

Professionally, it was going to be hard to leave my team and what I “knew”. I had been with the same group of radio stations and people for almost ten years. I was already in management and I was working on building the future of the team there. Personally, I had the most important reason to stay close to home as my Mom was battling stage IV pancreatic cancer. I had all the reasons in the world to say, “I’m good but thank you for considering me.” But, I didn’t.

After meeting the incredible team at CMG Atlanta, I knew this would be a place I could grow and develop into the leader that I wanted to be. Professionally, it seemed like a perfect fit but personally, I couldn’t leave my Mom. My Mom was also a “Boss” in her industry, so she was always my go to for career advice. When she said, “You better go for it or you’re not the daughter I know.” I knew there was no other choice but to DO IT. I accepted the job and started on March 9, 2020. Little did I know a Global Pandemic would be announced 3 days after I started in the office.

As a human being, the feeling of “decision remorse” started to creep in and like the rest of the World, I started asking myself all of the “W” questions, why, when, where, etc. Should I have stayed? How will I navigate this new company, market, etc. with so much unknown? Every day was a huge challenge. But every day I got stronger in my knowledge, slowly built virtual relationships, and found my place as a leader on the team. Over the last year, our team has accomplished incredible successes with some of our team members having their best year ever in 2020. The last year has been the most challenging and rewarding year in my career. Thank you to Jaleigh Long and the CMG leadership team for giving me the greatest opportunity of my life.

Today was only the second time in one year that I have been able to see my whole team in person (picture above). It was the best feeling in the world. As I reflected after our sales meeting today, I looked up in heaven where my Mom now lives and thanked her for pushing me.

When you have a gut feeling and you have the support from your family, GO FOR IT. You never know what or when something will happen that will turn your world upside down. “Don’t let life happen to you, make your life happen.”

You are where you're meant to be; leading a team of the best in the business, and despite the limitations this pandemic has proffered, you simply charged ahead. You're impressive both personally and professionally. So thankful to call you a colleague.
