To Go or Not to Go

To Go or Not to Go

Umpteen memes about Maldives is trending. The same memes are received in multiple groups. Those who have not stepped out of their town maybe boycotting their Maldives plan and those who did plan may now opt for Mauritius or Goa.

One of my friends listed all the popular island destinations and said he is boycotting all of them, and I jokingly replied saying he should consider going to Kailasa.

One single post or comment (impulsive or irresponsible or intended) can cascade and build up into a movement and create intended and unintended consequences. More so in the social media driven global village we are living in. As an example, the hashtag #maldivesboycott alone has had more than 37000 posts on twitter. Adding related hashtags can take the number higher. The known consequences of this trend is that at least three people lost their jobs and loss of the tourism business. Plus some of the not so favourable videos of Maldives will be back in circulation on social media. I saw one clip from BBC documentary showing the how the country dumps their waste on an island.

When we communicate in the virtual world, let us learn to to think first before we #justdoit. For we have always believed that karma follows like a shadow. We can choose the action but not the consequences.

On a lighter note, do let me know in the comments section if you have cancelled your Maldives trip :-)
