"Go back home where you belong"

"You, immigrant, go back home where you belong," someone said this to my face today. It marked my first encounter with such direct racism; previously, I had only heard stories from others or witnessed it on TV/YouTube. I've always pondered how people subjected to verbal abuse in such situations must feel. Now I understand; the emotional impact ranges from anger to weakness, shattering the concept of fairness like glass into myriad shattered pieces. The experience is devastating, painful, and heart-wrenching. Initially, there was shock, numbness, and a cold shiver, followed by a racing heartbeat, anger, and frustration.
Xenophobia, by definition, is the fear or dislike of people from other countries or cultures. The xenophobic comments I faced today inflicted emotional wounds, serving as a litmus paper for the level of cultural awareness and the equality and inclusion that the nation aspires to uphold. They expose systemic racism, individual hate, and emphasize the urgent need to promote inclusivity and respect.
This situation loudly calls for more education and effort to build an understanding of different cultures, recognize the valuable contributions of people from various backgrounds, and emphasize why xenophobia is NOT acceptable.
Addressing these issues demands a collective commitment to fostering empathy, dismantling stereotypes, and working towards a society that genuinely values the richness of its diversity. It's crucial to stand against discrimination, share stories like mine, and advocate for a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of their background or origin.
While my skin color might suggest an easier experience in America, let's refrain from labeling skin with "privilege." Such labeling only perpetuates societal division. Moreover, prejudice and discrimination extend beyond racial lines. Those of us who come from other countries and speak with an accent often find ourselves at the intersection of multiple biases.
I was born in Russia but have lived my life as a citizen of the world, from the USA to Cambodia, with The Netherlands eventually becoming my homeland. I speak with a mixed accent, a "definitely Slavic but where is she from exactly?" type of accent. As for my looks, I often hear, "I thought you were Polish"... Someone advised me last year to hide my mixed identity and remove any association with my birth country. It challenged me to think that I may only have a chance to succeed in life if I become a stranger to myself.

However, embracing my unique identity has become a source of strength. I refuse to conform to someone else's narrow definition of belonging. I belong wherever I CHOOSE TO BELONG.
The incident today fuels my determination even more to challenge stereotypes and contribute to a global society that values diversity.
Living as a global citizen has enriched my perspective and broadened my understanding of the world. Each country I've lived in and each culture I experienced has left an indelible mark on my identity.
My mixed accent and varied cultural influences are not liabilities; they are assets that contribute to a richer, more nuanced dialogue. It's this diversity that makes me who I am - a bridge between worlds, someone who can relate and act with a thorough understanding of cultural and human richness.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire conversations that challenge the prejudices that persist, giving a voice to those who may not have the opportunity to be heard.
I encourage you to share your stories in the comments below.
Only through the union of our voices and our advocacy can we build a more compassionate and inclusive future. Thank you for taking a stand in challenging and dismantling the roots of xenophobia.

I'm thinking about putting my cashmere jodhpurs on for an afternoon ride or gymkana. I think that it is a jungle out there and I'm glad that I live in Blighty and that no nasty foreigners can influence my way of life." [IRONIC] There are 10 words of Indian origin in that paragraph. 1 年I’m sorry you experienced this, though beautiful moment to share teachings with all of us. Thank you for sharing your experience and stay safe ??????????
Sorry to hear. Welcome to Wildersland... Somehow I have the feeling this might start happening more often. I haven't heard from my wife (language coach/teacher Dutch/English) of direct xenophobia that was directed at one of her students, but definitely of worries with them about society and politics. But, I guess it is just waiting to see when.

1 年Here in Luxembourg we have over 300 different nationalities on a very small territory. Plus first, second, third generation immigrants. So where do they, we, all belong? But they all tell each other to go home where they belong. But eventually they all stay and eventually all get along.
