Go-Ahead Singapore Shines at Public Transport Safety and Security Awards

Go-Ahead Singapore Shines at Public Transport Safety and Security Awards

With millions of people commuting on public transport daily, ensuring its safety and security is paramount. The Public Transport Safety and Security Awards (PTSSA) recognise the dedication of public transport operators and workers in achieving this important goal. This year, Go-Ahead Singapore proudly received five prestigious PTSSA accolades, comprising four Star Awards and a Special Commendation Award at the recent ceremony.

  • Special Commendation: Rohaizam Bin Rashid?

The Special Commendation Award was presented to our bus captain, Rohaizam Bin Rashid. On 15 January 2023, while driving Service 518 along Tampines Avenue 7, Rohaizam encountered a vehicle on fire near the bus stop outside Block 497D. Without hesitation, he pulled over and promptly took action to contain the fire. His quick thinking and courage averted a potential catastrophe, ensuring the safety of fellow road users. In recognition of his bravery, Rohaizam will also receive the Community First Responder Award from the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Apart from Rohaizam's accomplishment, the company was honoured with four Star Awards for our pioneering efforts to enhance safety and security throughout our operations.

  • Star: Cyclist and Bus Captain Awareness Session?

In May 2022, we organised a cyclist and bus captain awareness session at Loyang Bus Depot for about 20 bus captains and cyclists. Supported by the Land Transport Authority and the Singapore Cycling Federation, this innovative initiative marked a first for Singapore’s public transport industry. It aimed to foster mutual understanding between bus captains and cyclists, ultimately making our roads safer.

The session included scenario briefings and role-playing exercises, offering participants valuable insights into road usage habits, potential hazards, and strategies for safe navigation. This groundbreaking session exemplifies our commitment to collaboration and fostering understanding among road users, contributing to safer journeys for all.

  • Star: Implementation of a Full-Height Turnstile at Loyang Bus Depot Side Gate?

Recognising that security is paramount, our security and facilities teams collaborated to improve access control at Loyang Bus Depot. Previously, security officers manned the side gate during specific hours, requiring employees to use the main entrance at other times. This arrangement inconvenienced employees and posed safety concerns.

To address these issues, we installed a full-height turnstile at the side gate, ensuring that access required a valid employee pass. This physical barrier permits only one person to pass at a time, effectively restricting entry to authorised personnel. Its visible presence also serves as a deterrent, reducing the chances of unauthorised entry and enhancing overall security.

  • Star: Developing a Reward Scheme for Reporting Workplace Safety Hazards or Security Issues?

Encouraging employees and the Wider Non-Security Community (WNSC), including contractors and tenants, to promptly report safety hazards and security concerns is of utmost importance. To achieve this, we introduced an incentive-based reporting scheme with multiple reporting options, including a QR code, WhatsApp, or phone calls to make it convenient for anyone to raise concerns.

This initiative provides varying rewards based on the seriousness of reported hazards, encouraging individuals to report concerns without regard to their perceived severity. Since June 2022, we have received 18 reports, with 13 valid submissions resulting in corresponding rewards. It emphasises our commitment to proactive safety measures and fosters a culture of security and vigilance.

  • Star: Planning and Administration of Safety Campaigns?

To reinforce a culture of safety and minimise workplace accidents, Go-Ahead Singapore launched the "Eyes on Path" and "Eyes on Task" campaigns, effectively utilising both physical and digital tools to disseminate information and engage employees. Bite-sized information was shared, followed by quizzes to assess employees' comprehension.

During the "Eyes on Path" campaign, employees were encouraged to participate, with attractive prizes, including the opportunity to win an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Over 60% of colleagues completed the quizzes, indicating a high level of engagement and contributing to a safer working environment.

In Go-Ahead Singapore, our dedication to safety and security extends beyond mere recognition; it is an inherent aspect of our identity. These awards from PTSSA underline our dedication to ensuring the well-being of our employees and the safety of the public transport system. We remain steadfast in introducing innovative initiatives, fostering collaboration, and promoting a culture of safety and security for all. Together, we make public transport journeys even safer and more comfortable for everyone.
