GMAT Verbal Prep

GMAT Candidate - I have revised all the rules in GMAT sentence correction and have exhausted all the official guide and verbal review questions. My verbal score in the actual test, however, was quite low - How do I improve my score in sentence correction, and hence in Verbal?

My response - The GMAT, as an exam, is not a test of Math or English. Sure, a certain level of foundational concept clarity is required in both domains, but relying solely on formulas or grammar and solving plenty of questions is generally not going to propel your score in the 700s. GMAT is an exam in which focusing on quality questions and analyzing them thoroughly is more beneficial than simply solving 1000s of questions arbitrarily.

Focus on logical meaning, modifier placement, and pattern recognition on SC than just on pure grammar. Similarly, in the Verbal section, can you confidently explain why the other 4 options are incorrect (eg extreme language, out of scope, etc). Are you able to eliminate options on the basis of 1-2 words/phrases in, say, 85-90% of the official questions? If the answer is yes, only then can you claim to have understood the GMAT nuances and developed the logical thinking required to ace the GMAT.

Final thoughts: The GMAT official content (OG, QR, VR, etc.) is sufficient to score a 750+ on the GMAT, but it is the detailed analysis of those questions with a GMAT tutor that is the key.

Candidate - Okay, so where should I practice additional questions from?

Me - Now is the time for you to practice less and evaluate more!
