GLT commits to safe and sustainable practices!

In an effort to enhance overall sustainability, GLT has adopted an increased emphasis on streamlined production processes to drastically reduce waste, improve safety, and pass the benefits onto its customers and industry.

Building on its new manufacturing capabilities and enhanced in-house operations, GLT is making sustainable leaps in this area.

By processing wastewater, utilising rainwater, and expanding and optimising in-house capabilities, GLT’s carbon footprint is being dramatically reduced.

“The elimination of waste is a key component of GLT’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint,” said GLT CEO, Shay Chalmers.

“There’s also a major focus on measuring, monitoring and improving energy efficiency across the company with plans for green energy being implemented, including solar power.”

Over the past year, the company has also invested significantly in enhancing culture while ensuring it has a greater understanding around safety and compliance.

“Employee engagement is at the heart of this, and we understand that above all for our team, it’s about going home safe from work every day,” Chalmers said.

“As a result, we've rewritten our induction programs, implemented training programs and ensured our equipment is industry-leading when it comes to safety.”

At the head of this focus is a multi-million dollar five-axis milling machine, which, according to Chalmers, is one of three in the Southern Hemisphere.

It features a laser safety system that can shut the machine down if anyone goes near it.

Above all else, GLT specifically designs and manufactures its trailers with carbon emission reduction in mind.

Its units offer light tare weights while retaining impressive payloads, allowing transporters to carry more freight in less trips.

“A GLT A-double combination trailer carrying?50,000 tonnes of payload across 130,000km over the course of a year saves approximately 2,400 litres of diesel,” Chalmers said.

“This translates to a significant carbon emission reduction of over 6,000kg CO2e/kg.”

Additionally, GLT is currently collaborating with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) on several projects that span product design and optimise manufacturing, with an onus on carbon footprint reduction.

Chalmers is on the UNSW Institute for Industrial Decarbonisation committee herself, and she is working across the industry with a number of key players to focus on transport and see how the industry as a whole can reduce its carbon footprint.
