No Glory in the Mediocre
Wise words from one of my favourite young South African chefs...

No Glory in the Mediocre

The whole world is dabbing...

A Hip Hop trend that was birthed in the US spread like wildfire across the globe. In no time, presidents were dabbing, the world's best football players celebrated goal-scoring glory with 'the dab'...well even Paul Ryans son was caught dabbing during his father's official appointment into the new US administration (he might still be grounded for that). But like any other trend, it a metaphor and a microcosm of business and enterprise for me: it reflects what becomes the norm, the general standard and expectation, and the way of life for as long as the trend survives.

The normal, ordinary, and the same as which everyone else is doing is surely not the disruptive entrepreneur wants to become. It becomes repetitive, it becomes common, and very soon it loses value. And you are in the business of 'lets do it like this because this is how everyone else seems to be doing it'; there is probably very little chance of longevity in your business.

If you are working on, and building something great and trying to be a better version of you, why worry about doing what everyone else is doing? Why focus on average just because it's what the general population wants to focus us? Why swim in the sea of sameness when you can just embrace your individuality? focus on average just because it's what the general population wants to focus us? Why swim in the sea of sameness when you can just embrace your individuality?

As an entrepreneur you have a choice: Be like everyone else and be mediocre and forgettable, or stand out from the crowd and be who you really want to be??

The normal, ordinary, and the same as which everyone else is doing is surely not the disruptive entrepreneur wants to become. It becomes repetitive, it becomes common, and very soon it loses value.
