The Glory Days of Halloween 2008

The Glory Days of Halloween 2008

In 2008, I worked in the e-counselling department at Morneau Shepell. On multiple occasions, I lovingly referred to our team as the Island of Misfit Toys.

In October of that year, our department decided to win Halloween. Which wasn’t easy with the Trauma department to our right and the Family Matters team to our left. The theme was doomed wedding. I was the bride. My colleague and best-friend-forever, Scott, was the groom. We had a bridesmaid and a priest. We made a model car that crashed in front of our e-counselling cubicles. We left wedding invites on desks in every department on our floor. ?

As the wedding was doomed, we were all … DEAD! Scott is a creative genius who showed up as my decapitated groom. Our bridesmaid was also a creative type who did our makeup to perfection. It was the most beautiful corpse wedding that ever happened in an EAP call centre. (And we won ALL the prizes.)

Preparing for this event took a lot of time. Off the clock. After the event, I made four Halloween ’08 photo albums—one for each member of our doomed wedding. That also took a lot of time.

Why did we do all that? Not for the prizes. For the enjoyment of it. We had fun creating the scenario and everyone who came by was delighted by the fruits of our labour.

That’s what I encourage you to think about when putting a newsletter in the hopper. Will this delight my readers in some way? Maybe it will help them. Or entertain them. Or tell them about a super-useful course you’re launching. Or encourage them to keep on keeping on, despite their struggles.

If you put the reader at the centre of your newsletter (and avoid Comic Sans font), you’ll connect with people. And some of those people—who are already kinda interested in what you do—will turn into your loyal fans and customers.

So, go ahead and have some fun with your newsletter. Enjoy yourself and bring that joy to your readers. That’s what keeps them coming back.

Happy Halloween!

Doomed Wedding, Bride and Groom

Until next time,

Andrea

PS: What was your best ever Halloween costume? I hope you’ll take a few minutes to relish your Halloween glory days, as I have.

Andrea Bassett, I agree that the reader should be the center of your newsletter. I love your photo. Now that's memorable!
