Global Wind Day

15 June every year is celebrated as the Global Wind Day.

Initiated by the European Wind Energy Association, the Wind Day got its global traction after the Global Wind Energy Council supported it.

The objectives are largely to promote the use of Wind Energy. On this day, several events are held to inform children and adults alike about the Wind Energy and how it is helping in the action against Climate Change.

In 2024, people can participate in the celebrations by tagging #WorkingInWind.

Wind Energy: Potential and Installations so far

A better understanding of the potential of Wind Energy is shown in this graphic below[1]:

Figure 1: Comparison between the amount of solar energy absorbed by the Earth in one year and the fossil fuel recoverable reserves[2]

From fig. 1, we notice that the renewable energy energies are an annual potential. And the conventional fuels are the total reserves Earth has. Once its finished, it is gone for good. Whereas obviously the renewable energy sources are available every year – year-in and year-out.

Since 2000, the world has also been installing Wind Energy on a regular basis. Fig. 2 below shows the annual installations and the cumulative installations so far, since 2000.

Figure 2: Wind Energy Installations: Annual and Cumulative

2030: 3.5TW of Installations

In 2024, the cumulative Wind Energy installations stood at 1017GW. IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook foresees about 3,040 GW of cumulative onshore wind and 494 GW of offshore wind by 2030. This would mean a cumulative 3,500 GW (3.5TW) of Wind Energy installations by 2030[3].

Figure 3: Target 3x Installation by 2030: Tailwinds & Headwinds (Reproduced from GWR 2024)

#COP28 saw about 200 countries agree to increase the installation of Renewable Energy by 3x by 2030. That would mean adding about 11,000GW by 2030. With current policies that goal seems difficult. Should the respective governments take necessary measures, then the industry is likely to see even more spectacular growth in the depth and width of penetration of Renewable Energy.
